Prunes are lower in sugar than some dried fruits

“Lower than raisins” should not be translated into “low in sugar.” A realistic serving and the rest of the meal are more informative than the ranking among dried fruits.

Fiber is not working alone

The 7.1 g of fiber per 100 g can add bulk and change stool consistency. Sorbitol is incompletely absorbed and can draw water into the intestine. Phenolic compounds and the fruit matrix may contribute as well.

Clinical research on prunes has found improvements in stool frequency and consistency in some groups. That does not turn prunes into a universal dose-dependent remedy; bowel habits also depend on total diet, fluids, activity, medications, and health conditions.

Individual response varies because tolerance to sorbitol differs. Someone who already eats plenty of fiber may notice a different effect from someone whose usual intake is low.

More is not always more comfortable

Someone who jumps from no prunes to a large portion may notice gas, bloating, or loose stools because both fiber and sorbitol increase at once. Starting with about 20–30 g makes it easier to judge individual tolerance.

Adequate fluids and fiber from a range of foods are generally more practical than relying on one dried fruit to carry the entire job.

If several other high-fiber foods or polyol-rich foods are already part of the day, a smaller prune serving may be more comfortable. The goal is not to maximize sorbitol but to find an amount that fits the person’s usual diet.

How prunes fit into an everyday diet

Four or five prunes can be paired with yogurt, oatmeal, nuts, or savory dishes. Their sweetness can also reduce the need for some added sugar in recipes, although the fruit still contributes its own naturally occurring sugars.

Pairing the serving with yogurt, nuts or oats also makes the snack more structured by adding protein, fat or additional fiber. That can be more useful than eating directly from a large bag with no clear portion.

The balanced read is that prunes provide a useful amount of fiber for a small food and have a carbohydrate profile relevant to bowel regularity, while remaining energy-dense dried fruit. A visible 30-g serving is easier to interpret than eating from the bag.
