Comparing 100 g of dry coffee with 100 g of cocoa is nutritionally neat and practically useless. You do not make both drinks with the same amount of dry material. The fair question is how much caffeine ends up in a normal cup.
Normal servings put coffee clearly ahead
A cup of brewed coffee usually contains far more caffeine than a cocoa drink, but serving size and recipe still matter. Espresso looks concentrated per milliliter, yet a small shot can contain less total caffeine than a large mug of filter coffee. Cocoa powder contributes some caffeine, while chocolate drinks also vary according to how much powder or chocolate is used. Comparing the actual serving you drink is therefore more useful than comparing dry coffee beans with dry cocoa powder gram for gram.
EFSA uses approximate guide values of 90 mg caffeine for 200 mL filter coffee and 80 mg for a 60 mL espresso. The USDA natural unsweetened cocoa reference contains 230 mg caffeine per 100 g.
That makes 5 g cocoa about 12 mg caffeine and 10 g about 23 mg. On that basis, the filter coffee contains roughly four to eight times as much caffeine.

Both foods vary. Brew strength, bean species, grind, and extraction change coffee; cultivar and cocoa processing change cocoa.
Cocoa’s main methylxanthine is not caffeine
Cocoa contains much more theobromine than caffeine. Theobromine belongs to the same broad methylxanthine family but has a different stimulant profile and generally feels milder. This helps explain why a dark chocolate dessert or strong cocoa can still feel noticeable even when its caffeine number is modest. Coffee, by contrast, is usually chosen specifically for its caffeine effect. Treating all methylxanthines as though they were equivalent can make the comparison sound more dramatic than it really is.
Cocoa contains much more theobromine. The USDA entry lists about 2,057 mg/100 g theobromine versus 230 mg caffeine. A 5.4 g tablespoon works out to roughly 111 mg theobromine.
That helps explain why cocoa and coffee are not physiologically identical, but 111 mg theobromine is not equivalent to 111 mg caffeine. They are related compounds with different effects.
The drinks are nutritionally different too
Black brewed coffee is mostly water and extracted compounds, so it contributes very few calories on its own. Cocoa powder is a solid food containing fiber, protein, fat, carbohydrate, and minerals. A tablespoon of unsweetened cocoa contributes around 12 calories before milk or sugar.
A finished cocoa drink can therefore be much more calorie-dense than black coffee while still containing less caffeine.
Which is better if you want less caffeine?
The nutrition around the stimulant differs too. Plain black coffee contributes very few calories, whereas cocoa powder brings fiber, minerals, and some fat; a prepared cocoa drink may also include milk and sugar. Those additions can dominate the calorie difference much more than the caffeine itself. A sweet café drink can likewise become calorie-dense. The useful comparison is therefore between real beverages as prepared, not between an idealized ‘coffee’ and an idealized ‘cocoa’ without considering what goes into the cup.
A modest cocoa drink generally wins on caffeine quantity, but it is not zero-caffeine. Very sensitive people may still notice it. Total daily intake from tea, soda, chocolate, energy drinks, and other sources matters too.
There is no fixed conversion
For someone trying to reduce evening stimulation, both dose and timing matter. A small cocoa made with modest powder will usually provide less caffeine than coffee, but individual sensitivity varies and chocolate can still contribute methylxanthines. Decaffeinated coffee is another option when the flavor is wanted without most of the caffeine. Looking at the whole day is helpful: multiple teas, cola, energy drinks, chocolate, and coffee can add up even when no single serving seems especially large.
It is tempting to say one mug of cocoa equals one-quarter of a coffee, but products vary too widely. A strongly brewed coffee can exceed the guide value, while an alkalized cocoa can contain much less caffeine than the natural reference.
The robust conclusion is narrower: coffee is usually the much larger caffeine source per drink; cocoa provides less caffeine, much more theobromine, and an entirely different food matrix.
