Protein and vitamin B12 in nutritional yeast

To know whether it meaningfully contributes B12, check the amount per serving and the daily-value information, then compare that serving with how much you actually sprinkle onto a meal rather than assuming the package name tells you enough.

Why the range is so wide

Fortification is a formulation choice, not a fixed property of the yeast. One manufacturer may add a modest amount of cyanocobalamin or methylcobalamin; another may add much more; an unfortified product may have no dependable B12 at all.

That is why an online average is a poor way to dose B12. The current label is the relevant number.

Can nutritional yeast be a B12 source in a vegan diet?

Fortification also changes how the B12 number should be interpreted. The vitamin does not necessarily come from the yeast naturally; manufacturers may add it to the finished product. There is nothing inherently inferior about that when the label is clear. In fact, fortification is exactly why some brands can be useful in vegan eating patterns. The mistake is assuming every yellow flake product provides the same amount simply because it is sold under the same general name.

A high-protein unfortified nutritional yeast can be nutritionally useful while contributing no reliable B12. A fortified product can supply substantial B12 in a small serving. These are two independent features.

The simplest shopping rule is therefore: use grams per serving to judge protein, and the explicit B12 line on the Nutrition Facts panel to judge vitamin B12.
