Almond, oat, soy, pea, rice and coconut beverages may occupy one shelf, but they are not one nutritional category. FDA guidance recommends comparing the Nutrition Facts label for protein, calcium, vitamin D and potassium, while also watching saturated fat and added sugars. This matters most when a plant beverage is replacing dairy milk every day rather than being used occasionally in coffee or a recipe.
Start with protein because the gap can be large
A cup of cow’s milk typically supplies around eight grams of high-quality protein. Many soy and pea beverages can approach that amount, while some almond, rice and oat products provide only a small fraction. Brand formulations change, so category averages should not replace the label.
If a low-protein drink is simply something you enjoy, there is no problem provided the rest of your diet covers protein needs. If it replaces milk in a child’s or adult’s daily pattern, the missing protein becomes more relevant and should be supplied elsewhere.
Fortified calcium can match milk without making the drinks identical
Manufacturers often add calcium salts to plant beverages, and a fortified product may list as much or more calcium per serving than dairy milk. Vitamin D and vitamin B12 may also be added. That is useful, but fortification patterns vary between products and countries.
Shake products when the label instructs you to, because added minerals can settle. Also remember that an equal calcium number does not guarantee equal protein, potassium, iodine or other nutrients. One matched value cannot stand in for the entire composition.
Added sugar can change an otherwise similar product
Unsweetened and original versions of the same oat or almond beverage can differ substantially in added sugar. Some products use sugar or syrups for flavor, while carbohydrate-processing methods can also affect total sugars. A sweetened plant drink can still provide fortified nutrients, but if it is consumed multiple times a day the sugar adds up quickly. Choosing unsweetened versions is a simple way to keep the replacement focused on the beverage rather than dessert-like sweetness.
Saturated fat depends strongly on the plant source
Many soy, almond and oat beverages are low in saturated fat, although recipes differ. Coconut-based drinks can be much higher because coconut fat contains a large saturated fraction. Cow’s milk also changes with fat level, from fat-free through whole milk.
Compare equivalent serving sizes and the product you actually use. It is misleading to compare whole dairy milk with one plant drink and then apply the conclusion to every type of milk. The nutrition question is always product specific.
Soy is often the closest conventional dairy replacement
In U.S. dietary guidance, fortified soy beverage has traditionally been recognized as the plant option nutritionally closest to milk because it can provide a similar amount of protein along with added calcium and vitamin D. Newer high-protein pea and blended products can also look similar on selected nutrients.
That does not mean soy is mandatory or automatically superior for every person. Allergies, taste, cost, environmental preferences and dietary pattern all matter. The point is that a daily replacement should be chosen for the nutrients you need, not because all cartons with a white liquid are equivalent.
Use a short label checklist
When replacing milk regularly, check protein first, then calcium, vitamin D, potassium and B12 where relevant. Look at saturated fat and added sugar, and consider iodine if dairy has been an important source in your diet. For children, individualized pediatric guidance is especially important because nutrient needs are high.
A plant beverage can be an excellent choice without being a nutritional copy of cow’s milk. Read the exact carton, choose fortification and protein that fit the role it will play, and let the rest of the diet cover what the beverage does not provide.
