Whole-wheat bread is often treated as the lower-calorie version of white bread. Generic composition data tell a different story: calories are close; fiber and whole-grain structure are the more meaningful differences.

The energy gap is only 14 calories per 100 g. Fiber is much more different: the whole-wheat reference supplies more than twice as much, 6.0 versus 2.7 g.
Why whole wheat has more fiber
Whole-wheat flour retains the bran, germ and endosperm. White flour removes much of the bran and germ during refining, taking away a large share of the grain’s natural fiber.
Color alone does not prove a loaf is whole grain. Molasses, malt and seeds can darken bread, so the ingredient list and whole-grain wording matter more than appearance.
Protein is higher in this reference, not every loaf
