Fruits lowest in calories

Watermelon at 30 calories and blackberries at 43 differ by only 13 calories per 100 g. That is too small a gap to turn the table into a health score; fiber, micronutrients and serving size can matter more.

Water content drives much of the ranking

Watermelon is roughly 91% water, and cantaloupe is around 90%. That leaves relatively little dry matter per 100 g to contribute energy.

Strawberries follow the same pattern: mostly water, with very little fat.

Lemon and lime rank low but have unusual servings

Their per-100-g calorie values are low, but few people eat 7 ounces of lemon as dessert. Their ranking position describes concentration, not a typical serving recommendation.

Watermelon is the opposite: a 200–300 g portion is easy to eat, so total calories rise even though its energy density stays low.

Real portions put the numbers in context

150 g strawberries provide about 48 calories, while 250 g watermelon provides around 75 calories. About 150 g edible peach is roughly 59 calories.

All are modest amounts in the context of a meal, and choosing among them to save ten calories is usually less useful than choosing whole fruit you actually enjoy.

Serving size makes a large difference because fruits are not eaten in identical 100-gram portions. A cup of berries, a slice of watermelon, a whole peach, and several plums all look different on the plate even when their calories are similar. Using familiar portions is often more useful for meal planning than memorizing a strict ranking.

Fiber also changes how filling a fruit feels. Berries can be relatively low in calories while supplying meaningful fiber; grapes contain more energy per 100 grams and are easy to eat quickly; citrus combines water with membranes that slow eating. The calorie number alone does not capture chewing time or satiety.

Preparation can raise energy density quickly. Dried fruit loses water, juice removes much of the intact fiber structure, and syrups or sweetened canned fruit add sugar. These foods can still fit a diet, but they are not equivalent to the same fruit eaten fresh in a typical serving.

The best choice usually depends on preference, season, and what else is in the meal. Choosing fruit you actually enjoy and eat consistently matters more than selecting only the lowest-calorie option. Variety also spreads vitamin C, carotenoids, potassium, polyphenols, and different types of fiber across the diet.

Very low-calorie fruits can be especially useful when volume is desired, but they do not need to replace denser options such as bananas, grapes, mangoes, or avocados. Those foods can be valuable when more energy, carbohydrate, or healthy fat is useful, such as around exercise or for people with higher calorie needs.

Seasonal ripeness often improves flavor enough that fruit needs no sweetener. A ripe peach, melon, or berries can make yogurt or cereal sweeter while adding water and fiber. That substitution can reduce added sugar more effectively than simply choosing the fruit with the lowest number of calories.

Frozen fruit deserves a place in the same conversation. Unsweetened frozen berries, mango, peaches, or cherries can retain much of their nutritional value and make portioning easy outside the fresh season. They may soften after thawing, but for yogurt, oatmeal, sauces, and smoothies that texture change is often irrelevant. Choosing frozen can also reduce waste when fresh fruit tends to spoil before it is eaten.

Lower calorie does not mean nutritionally superior

Avocado has about 160 calories per 100 g because it contains much more fat, but it also provides fiber, potassium and predominantly unsaturated fat. Raspberries have 52 calories per 100 g—higher than strawberries—while supplying around 6.5 g fiber.

Energy density answers one question; it is not an overall nutrition score.
