How Long Does Opened Yogurt Last, and How Can You Tell It’s Bad?

USDA lists about 1–2 weeks as a general refrigerated range for yogurt at 40°F (4°C) or below. Once opened, follow the manufacturer’s directions and use it sooner when practical. A little whey on top can be normal; mold, a swollen container, unexpected gas, or a clearly abnormal odor are not.

Opening yogurt introduces air, utensils, and microorganisms from the environment. That does not ruin it in hours, but it reduces the protection of an unopened package.

A general reference: 1–2 weeks refrigerated

USDA guidance lists yogurt at about one to two weeks in the refrigerator at 40°F or below. That is a broad storage guideline, not a promise that every opened cup is good through day 14.

After opening, keep it cold, close it tightly, use clean utensils, and follow any shorter manufacturer instruction.

Whey on top can be normal

A thin layer of yellowish liquid is often whey separation and can be stirred back in. That is different from unexpected bubbles, swelling, strong alcoholic or rotten odors, or a slimy texture that is new for that product.

Mold means discard the whole container

Yogurt is soft and moist. If mold appears, do not scrape off the top and eat underneath.

Yogurt is acidic, but it is not immune to spoilage

Its acidity and cultures make growth harder for many microorganisms, which helps explain why yogurt can keep for days after opening. Each opening still introduces air and utensils, and molds or yeasts can grow at the surface.

Using a clean spoon, closing the container and returning it promptly to the refrigerator preserves that margin. Repeatedly eating from the tub with the same utensil increases contamination and makes any general storage timeline less informative.

Look for change from normal

Yogurt is already acidic and fermented, so “it smells sour” is not useful by itself. Look for changes from the product’s usual aroma, color, texture, and packaging.

Use the date and storage range as context, then let mold, gas, abnormal odor, and texture decide sooner when necessary.

The printed date is not the only clock after opening

A sealed yogurt may remain acceptable through its labeled date when continuously refrigerated, but opening introduces new microbes and oxygen. The condition of the refrigerator and how the container is handled now matter more. Marking the lid with the opening date is a simple way to avoid guessing later, especially in households where several tubs are open at once.

Use clean utensils every time

A spoon that has touched cereal, fruit or the mouth can seed the yogurt with additional microorganisms. Scoop the portion you need with a clean utensil, close the lid, and return the tub to the refrigerator promptly. These habits do not make yogurt last indefinitely, but they reduce avoidable contamination and flavor changes.

Temperature abuse shortens the useful window

Yogurt carried in a lunch bag or left on the breakfast table for hours should not be judged by the same timeline as yogurt kept continuously cold. The longer it sits warm, the less useful a one-to-two-week refrigerator estimate becomes. If it has been above refrigerator temperature for an extended period, discard it rather than relying on acidity as protection.

Separation is different from spoilage

A layer of pale whey on the surface is common because the gel contracts during storage. It can be stirred back in or poured off according to preference. Pink, green, blue or fuzzy growth is different and indicates contamination. With yogurt, scraping mold from the top is not recommended because the soft, moist food can be contaminated beyond the visible spot.

Freezing is a quality decision

Yogurt can be frozen before it deteriorates, but thawing often makes the texture grainier or more separated. That is usually fine for smoothies, sauces or baking even if it is less pleasant eaten plain. Freeze portions while the yogurt is still fresh rather than using the freezer as a rescue for a container already near spoilage.

Greek-style and high-protein yogurts may look different as they age

Thicker yogurts often release less visible whey than standard yogurt, while strained products can become denser near the edges after repeated opening. Fruit-on-the-bottom products can also change color where fruit pigments mix with the cultured milk. These variations are not automatically spoilage. The important comparison is with how that specific product normally looks and smells, combined with storage time, temperature history and any sign of mold or gas production.

Single-serve cups can reduce repeated contamination because each container is opened once, but they create more packaging and may cost more per serving. Large tubs are economical when the household uses yogurt frequently. The best format is therefore the one that will be consumed comfortably within its open-storage window while remaining consistently cold.
