A list of ‘foods highest in omega-3’ can put chia above salmon and still give the wrong impression. The reason is simple: omega-3 is not one single fat.
ALA is found mainly in seeds, walnuts and plant oils. EPA and DHA come mainly from fish and seafood. The body can convert some ALA into EPA and DHA, but only in limited amounts, so these foods are better compared in separate groups.

Chia and flax stand out clearly for ALA. An ounce of chia provides more than 5 grams, while an ounce of walnuts provides about 2.6 grams.
The food form matters for what else comes with that ALA. Flaxseed oil is extremely concentrated but contributes essentially no fiber or protein. Whole seeds and walnuts package their ALA with fiber, protein, minerals and a physical structure that changes how they are used and eaten.
That difference matters in a meal. A tablespoon of flax oil can deliver a large dose of ALA with very little volume, while an ounce of walnuts provides less ALA but also contributes protein, fiber and minerals. Ranking those foods only by omega-3 grams ignores the different jobs they can perform.

If you only totaled grams, chia would appear to ‘beat’ salmon. But salmon supplies preformed EPA and DHA, while chia supplies mostly ALA. Those are different comparisons.
Fish values are not perfectly fixed either. Species, feed, season, origin and preparation can all move the numbers. Database values are best read as useful comparisons of scale rather than guarantees for every individual fillet.
Fish also brings other nutrients that are invisible in an omega-3 ranking. Salmon can provide roughly 20–25 grams of protein per 100 grams, while bone-in sardines contribute calcium. Those differences matter when choosing a food, even though they are separate from the omega-3 calculation.
Why ALA conversion does not make the two groups equivalent
ALA is essential and must come from the diet. Some can be converted to EPA and then DHA, but the conversion is limited. A diet with chia or walnuts can therefore provide plenty of ALA without delivering the same amount of EPA and DHA as fatty fish.
People who avoid fish can obtain preformed EPA and DHA from microalgae-based foods or supplements, which is a separate source from seeds and nuts.
That does not make ALA a lesser nutrient. It is essential in its own right. The useful distinction is simply that ALA, EPA and DHA should not be added together as though equal grams were metabolically identical when food sources are compared.
The type of fish matters as much as simply eating fish
Fatty fish contain far more EPA and DHA than very lean species. Three ounces of Pacific cod provide roughly 0.14 g of EPA+DHA, compared with about 1.83 g in the same serving of farmed Atlantic salmon—more than a tenfold difference.
Serving size matters too. A small can of sardines can deliver a meaningful amount of EPA and DHA even though it weighs less than a restaurant-size fillet, while a large portion of lean white fish may be excellent for protein without being particularly concentrated in marine omega-3.
Walnuts have a different role from fish
An ounce of walnuts provides about 2.6 g of ALA along with fiber and other nutrients. It is not accurate to call that equivalent to 2.6 g of EPA+DHA, but walnuts remain one of the most practical food sources of ALA.
A varied diet does not need to turn these foods into competitors. Chia, flax or walnuts can provide ALA regularly, while fatty fish—when eaten—adds preformed EPA and DHA. The sources are complementary rather than entries in one winner-take-all ranking.
The useful rule
Think in two columns rather than one podium: chia, flax and walnuts for ALA; salmon, herring, sardines, mackerel and trout for EPA and DHA. Separating the forms of omega-3 tells you much more about what each food actually provides.
