Vitamin B12 has an unusually lopsided ranking. A serving of liver can contain tens of micrograms, while a large egg contains about half a microgram.
That does not mean liver needs to be an everyday food. B12 can accumulate across fish, meat, dairy, eggs, and fortified foods; the important part is having a dependable source often enough to meet needs.
The gaps between servings are enormous

Beef liver supplies more than 25 times as much B12 as a similar serving of salmon. The gap is real, but the body does not need every meal to maximize concentration. A pattern that includes several moderate sources can meet needs without relying on the foods at the very top of the ranking.
Shellfish and liver are exceptional rather than necessary daily foods
Clams, oysters, and liver can exceed the U.S. Daily Value of 2.4 mcg in a single serving. Liver is also extremely rich in preformed vitamin A, so its extraordinary B12 concentration is not a reason to treat large daily servings as automatically better.
Frequency matters more than a single dramatic number. Someone who rarely eats liver needs other reliable B12 sources, and the same applies to shellfish. They can be excellent contributors without being necessary for everyone.
Fish provides a moderate amount that is easy to use regularly
Three ounces of salmon or tuna provide about 2.5–2.6 mcg. Other fish and shellfish vary, but many species make a meaningful contribution.
That makes fish a practical part of a B12 pattern for people who eat it, alongside dairy, eggs, or meat. Values still differ by species and preparation, so a useful nutrition table should identify the actual fish rather than treating all seafood as one number.
Dairy and eggs add up in familiar servings
A cup of milk provides about 1.3 mcg, a serving of yogurt around 1 mcg, and a large egg about 0.5 mcg. None comes close to liver, but regular servings can build a steady intake.
The practical advantage is repetition. Someone who drinks milk or eats yogurt most days and includes eggs several times a week can accumulate meaningful B12 even though no single serving looks spectacular.
Plant foods are not reliable natural B12 sources
Beans, vegetables, grains, nuts, and seeds do not naturally provide reliable vitamin B12. Some fermented foods may contain traces or inactive analogs, but they should not be treated as a dependable strategy.
A vegan diet therefore needs fortified foods or a reliable supplement. Nutritional yeast can provide substantial B12 when fortified, but the amount varies by brand and should be checked on the label. The same is true for some plant milks, breakfast cereals, and meat alternatives.
Fortified means the label matters
Two soy beverages can look almost identical while having completely different B12 content if one is fortified and the other is not. A cereal can provide a small fraction of the Daily Value or several times it depending on formulation.
There is therefore no universal B12 number for fortified plant foods. The useful information is the amount per serving on the label and how often that product is actually eaten.
A huge dose does not mean proportionally huge absorption
B12 absorption changes with dose and food source. As the amount in a meal rises, a smaller fraction is absorbed through the intrinsic-factor-dependent pathway. Seventy micrograms on a label therefore does not mean the body absorbs 30 times as much as it would from 2.4 micrograms.
This helps explain why very concentrated foods do not need to be eaten daily and why supplements may contain doses far above ordinary dietary requirements: the amount swallowed and the amount absorbed do not rise in a simple one-to-one relationship.
Age and some medical factors change the context
Some older adults absorb food-bound B12 less efficiently, and absorption can also be affected by certain gastrointestinal conditions, surgeries, or medications. In those situations, a diet that appears rich in B12 on paper may not fully solve the problem.
If deficiency has been diagnosed or important risk factors are present, treatment should be based on medical guidance rather than simply adding more liver or another highly concentrated food.
The useful rule
If you eat animal foods, fish, dairy, eggs, and meat can provide B12 regularly, while liver and shellfish are especially concentrated. If you avoid animal foods, the goal is not to find a plant that supposedly contains B12; it is to use a reliable fortified or supplemental source.
The ranking helps explain concentration, but planning depends on serving size, frequency, and reliability. A moderate source eaten regularly can be more useful than an exceptionally rich food that almost never appears in the diet.
