Lentils, chickpeas and beans are often described as if each has a very different nutritional job. Put them in the same state—cooked and drained—and the gaps become much smaller.
All three provide roughly 8–9 grams of protein per 100 grams and substantial fiber. Chickpeas are more calorie-dense, lentils usually carry a little more iron, and beans vary by variety. None wins every category.

Protein barely moves: 8.7 to 9.0 grams. Energy differs more. Chickpeas provide about 48 more calories than lentils and 37 more than kidney beans per 100 grams cooked.
The 100-gram view measures concentration, but a meal rarely contains exactly 100 grams. Translating those values into a realistic serving shows whether a small difference actually matters.
For protein, they are essentially tied
A 7-ounce serving provides about 18 grams of protein from lentils, 17.8 grams from chickpeas and 17.4 grams from kidney beans. Choosing one of these solely for protein would be splitting hairs.
If a meal needs more protein, increasing the serving or pairing the legume with tofu, tempeh, eggs, fish, meat or a grain is usually more consequential than switching between the three.
The rest of the meal contributes too. Bread, rice, seeds and other foods can add protein, so a difference of half a gram between legumes is easily outweighed by what else is on the plate.
Chickpeas pack more calories into the same cooked weight
Seven ounces of cooked chickpeas provide roughly 328 calories, compared with about 232 for lentils and 254 for kidney beans. That does not make chickpeas worse; it simply means the same cooked weight carries more energy.
That can be useful in different directions. Chickpeas may help when a more energy-dense meal is wanted, while lentils or some beans can provide similar protein and fiber with fewer calories at the same weight.
Recipe ingredients can matter even more. Oil, tahini, cheese, sausage or rich sauces can add far more calories than the natural difference between the legumes themselves.
All three are high-fiber foods
In about 7 ounces, lentils provide roughly 15.8 grams of fiber, chickpeas 15.2 grams and kidney beans 12.8 grams. The differences are real, but each is a major fiber contributor.
A large legume serving can therefore provide a substantial share of daily fiber. For someone who normally eats little fiber, suddenly increasing to a very large portion may also increase gas or bloating, so gradual increases can be easier to tolerate.
Lentils have a small iron edge, not a landslide
Cooked lentils provide about 3.3 mg of iron per 100 grams, compared with roughly 2.9 mg in chickpeas and kidney beans. Across a 7-ounce serving, that is about 6.6 versus 5.8 mg—less than a 1 mg difference.
This is nonheme iron. Eating the meal with vitamin C from bell pepper, tomato, citrus or kiwi can improve absorption.
Meal context can therefore matter more than the small ranking difference. Chickpeas served with peppers and tomatoes may create a different absorption environment from lentils eaten without a vitamin-C-rich food.
Bean variety moves the numbers
Black, white, pinto and kidney beans are not nutritionally identical. Protein and fiber tend to stay in a similar range, while minerals and carbohydrate can shift. In practice, the difference between bean varieties is usually smaller than the difference between a dry legume and the same food after cooking.
White beans, for example, can rank higher for some minerals than the kidney-bean reference shown here. “Beans” should not be treated as one universal set of numbers.
Dry and cooked legumes cannot be compared directly
Dry legumes can show 20–25 grams of protein per 100 grams. During cooking they absorb a large amount of water, increasing their weight and lowering protein concentration to roughly 8–9 grams per 100 grams cooked. Cooking did not destroy two-thirds of the protein; absorbed water changed the denominator.
The same principle affects calories, iron and other nutrients per 100 grams. A dry-food table beside a cooked-food table can create a dramatic-looking difference that does not represent an equivalent amount of original legume.
The useful conclusion
There is no universal winner. For protein and fiber, all three are close; chickpeas are more energy-dense, lentils have a modest iron advantage, and bean varieties add smaller differences. Rotating them gives variety without sacrificing the basic nutritional strengths.
Taste, recipe, digestive tolerance and the rest of the meal usually matter more than tenths of a gram of protein between these legumes.
