Chicken and turkey are often compared as if one were obviously the leaner, higher-protein choice. Put equivalent cuts side by side and the distinction becomes much less dramatic.
Cooked skinless breast meat from both birds provides about 30 grams of protein per 100 grams. Turkey breast can be somewhat leaner, but breast versus thigh and skin-on versus skinless matter more than switching species.

The protein gap is only about 1–2 grams per 100 grams. Even across a 5-ounce serving, that is just a few grams of protein.
Turkey can save some fat, but the exact cut changes the number
Very lean turkey breast can contain around 1–2 grams of fat per 100 grams compared with roughly 3.6 grams in cooked chicken breast. The calorie difference can land around 15–30 calories per 100 grams.
In a full meal, a tablespoon of cooking oil can add roughly 120 calories—far more than the typical species difference.
The cut matters more than the bird
Cooked skinless chicken thigh can contain about 26 grams of protein and around 11 grams of fat per 100 grams, much more fat than turkey breast. Turkey thigh is also fattier than turkey breast.
That is why ‘chicken versus turkey’ is too broad unless the cut is specified.
Skin widens the calorie gap further
Eating the skin adds fat to either bird. Comparing skinless turkey with skin-on chicken would make the species difference look much larger than it really is.
Micronutrients do not create a dramatic winner either
Both provide B vitamins, phosphorus, selenium and some zinc and iron. Amounts vary with cut and preparation, but there is no huge micronutrient advantage that automatically makes one bird superior.
Processed turkey is a different comparison
Fresh turkey breast and deli turkey are not interchangeable. Deli meat can contain much more sodium and additional ingredients. The same issue applies to processed chicken products.

The useful rule
Chicken and turkey are nutritionally very similar when equivalent cuts are compared. Protein differences are tiny; fat and calories are influenced more by breast versus thigh, skin and the amount of added cooking fat.
How preparation changes the comparison
Nutrition tables are easiest to interpret when the cooking method is held constant. Roasting a skinless breast without much added fat is a different food from breaded chicken tenders or turkey cooked with butter and gravy. Added oil, breading and sauces can move calories and sodium much more than the modest difference between the birds. For meal planning, compare like with like: the same cut, similar doneness, and roughly the same portion.
Dark meat is not a nutritional failure
Thigh and drumstick meat usually contain more fat than breast, yet they also bring a different eating experience and useful micronutrients. Someone who prefers dark meat can still build a balanced meal by adjusting the portion and the rest of the plate rather than treating breast meat as the only acceptable option. Removing the skin reduces fat substantially while keeping the characteristic flavor of the darker cut.
Protein quality is essentially a tie
Both chicken and turkey provide complete animal protein with all essential amino acids. In practical terms, either can support a high-protein meal, recovery after training, or a protein-rich diet for older adults. The amount actually eaten matters more than tiny laboratory differences. A 120–150 gram cooked serving of either lean bird contributes a large share of a typical meal’s protein target.
Sodium depends heavily on processing
Fresh poultry is naturally fairly low in sodium, but deli slices, brined roasts and injected products can be very different. A package labeled turkey may sound lean and simple while containing much more sodium than a plain chicken breast. Reading the nutrition label and ingredient list is therefore more useful than assuming turkey is automatically the “lighter” choice.
Choose by the dish, not by a ranking
Turkey breast works well when a very lean, mild protein is wanted; chicken thighs may be better when juiciness and tolerance for longer cooking matter. Cost, availability and leftovers also affect the choice. For most people, rotating both birds and varying the cuts is nutritionally sound and more realistic than trying to identify a universal winner.
