Walnuts do not lead common nut rankings for protein or fiber. Their most distinctive nutritional feature sits somewhere else: their fat is especially rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids and provides a meaningful amount of ALA omega-3.

The roughly 185 calories in the ounce come mainly from fat. What sets walnuts apart is not lower energy, but the fatty-acid composition of that fat.
The one-ounce column is the more useful kitchen reference. One hundred grams is more than three usual servings, so per-100-gram values can make both nutrients and calories look more extreme than the amount people typically eat at once.
Walnut omega-3 is ALA
Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) is an essential omega-3. The body can convert some ALA to EPA and then DHA, but conversion is limited.
That means 2.5 g of ALA from walnuts should not be presented as equivalent to 2.5 g of EPA+DHA from fish. They belong to the same omega-3 family but are different molecules with different metabolic pathways.
Walnuts are useful because they provide ALA easily in a familiar food. They do not need to be treated as a nutritional substitute for fish for that strength to matter.
How meaningful is 2.5 g of ALA?
U.S. Adequate Intake values for ALA are 1.6 g/day for adult men and 1.1 g/day for adult women. One ounce of walnuts therefore provides a concentrated amount of this plant omega-3.
That does not create an EPA+DHA requirement equivalence; it simply shows why walnuts stand out as an ALA source.
A normal serving can therefore make a large contribution to ALA intake without requiring a very large amount of food. Keep the interpretation specific to ALA rather than turning it into an artificial EPA/DHA comparison.
Other nuts provide more protein
One ounce of walnuts provides about 4.3 g of protein. Almonds provide around 6 g and pistachios about 5.7 g in the same weight.
The difference is roughly 1.5–1.7 g per serving. Real, but not enough to call walnuts protein-poor; protein simply is not their strongest comparative feature.
If a meal needs 20–30 grams of protein, walnuts can help but are not usually the sole anchor. They work better alongside yogurt, oats, beans, or another protein-rich food.
They also contain less fiber than almonds or pistachios
An ounce provides about 1.9 g of fiber, compared with roughly 3.5 g in almonds and 2.9 g in pistachios.
If maximizing fiber is the only goal, other nuts rank higher. If the goal is ALA within the nut category, walnuts move to the front.
Total fat is high and mostly unsaturated
More than 60 g of every 100 g of walnuts is fat. Much of it is polyunsaturated, including linoleic omega-6 and ALA omega-3; saturated fat is only around 6 g per 100 g.
That composition explains both their fatty-acid profile and their high calorie density.
Mostly unsaturated does not mean calorie-free. A measured serving makes it easier to use the fatty-acid profile without allowing the handful to grow far beyond the amount you intended.
Storage matters
The abundance of polyunsaturated fat also makes walnuts more susceptible to oxidation than nuts dominated by monounsaturated fat. Heat, light and oxygen speed rancidity.
An airtight container in a cool, dark place—or refrigeration for longer storage—helps preserve flavor and fat quality.
If walnuts develop paint-like, cardboard-like, stale-fat odors or an unfamiliar rancid bitterness, quality has declined. That is different from the mild tannic bitterness a fresh walnut can naturally have.
The practical idea
One ounce of walnuts provides about 2.5 g of ALA omega-3 along with roughly 4.3 g of protein and 1.9 g of fiber. Their nutritional strength is not winning every nut ranking; it is a polyunsaturated-fat profile that few common nuts match.
