A tidy refrigerator is useful, but the real safety goal is to make it physically difficult for raw chicken juice to reach food that will be eaten without further cooking.

The map works because it follows the direction of risk, not because the top shelf has special properties. Ready-to-eat foods are protected from raw foods; raw foods are contained and kept low; produce is organized according to humidity and use. If your refrigerator has specialized drawers or zones, adapt the layout without losing that logic.
Contain raw juices
Original meat packaging may leak. Put raw meat and poultry on a tray or in a container capable of catching liquid and keep it below ready-to-eat foods.
40°F is the important number
FDA recommends keeping the refrigerator at 40°F or below. An appliance thermometer gives more useful information than assuming a dial setting is accurate.
Do not pack so tightly that air cannot circulate
Cold air needs room to move. Overloading can create warmer pockets and make it harder for freshly stored leftovers to cool.
Use dates you can understand
Label leftovers and move older items forward. Refrigerator organization should reduce both foodborne risk and forgotten food waste.
Refrigerator shelves do not all run at exactly the same temperature, and the coldest spot is not identical in every appliance. The door experiences larger temperature swings each time it is opened, so it is usually better suited to condiments and other products that tolerate variation. Highly perishable foods benefit from the more stable interior shelves. At the same time, avoid filling the refrigerator so tightly that cold air cannot circulate around containers.
Organization also has a time component. Date leftovers and place older items where you will see them instead of letting them migrate to the back. Keep foods that need to be used soon in a visible zone. A refrigerator can be at the correct temperature and still generate waste or safety mistakes if nobody knows how long a container has been there.
Produce drawers are mainly a humidity-management tool, not a universal safety barrier. Use them for fruits and vegetables according to the appliance design, but keep raw animal foods physically contained elsewhere. The best layout is the one that preserves the same principles even when the shelf geometry of your refrigerator is different.
A clean refrigerator layout also reduces cross-contamination during ordinary use. Store raw packages where you can remove them without dragging them over containers of leftovers, and clean any spill promptly instead of moving other foods through it. Do not rely on a refrigerator drawer labeled “meat” if liquid can escape from an unsealed package. For produce, keeping visibly dirty unwashed items separate from washed ready-to-eat produce can simplify meal preparation. The aim is not a perfect showroom arrangement; it is a repeatable system in which temperature-sensitive food stays cold, raw juices stay contained, dates remain visible and commonly used items are easy to reach without disturbing everything else.
Eggs and milk are best kept where the appliance maintains a stable cold temperature, not wherever the packaging happens to fit most conveniently. If your refrigerator manual identifies a dedicated cold zone, use it according to the manufacturer’s directions. The organizing principle remains the same: stable cold for perishables and physical barriers between raw and ready-to-eat foods.
