Powdered peanut butter can look like a nutrition trick: it tastes like peanuts and supplies protein, yet a serving lists far fewer calories than regular peanut butter. The explanation is fat removal. To make the powder, roasted peanuts are pressed so that a substantial portion of their oil is extracted; the partially defatted solids are then ground. Because fat supplies 9 calories per gram, removing much of the oil sharply lowers energy density. This is not ordinary peanut butter with only water removed. Pressing removes oil and leaves concentrated peanut solids
Whole peanuts are naturally close to half fat by weight. Regular peanut butter keeps most of that natural oil, which creates its creamy texture and supplies a large share of its calories. For a fair comparison, note how many grams of dry powder you use to make the portion you eat and compare that with the grams of regular peanut butter. Count what you mix in as well. Water keeps the energy low; milk, sweetened yogurt, oil, or honey can narrow the calorie gap. In baking, the fat in regular peanut butter may also have a structural role that powder cannot reproduce. Powdered peanut butter is therefore not an identical substitute; it is a different ingredient that works especially well in some applications and poorly in others.
Which version fits which job
Powder makes sense when you want peanut flavor in a smoothie, sauce, or recipe where fat is not structurally important, or when you are carefully managing calorie density. Traditional peanut butter works better as a complete spread and retains the peanut’s natural fat profile. For someone who needs more energy—such as a person with low appetite or high calorie needs—the regular version can be an advantage rather than a drawback. There is no need to frame the products as good versus bad. Defatting explains where the calories went, and your intended use determines whether removing that energy is actually useful.
