Why washing can increase risk
Water hitting raw poultry can carry microorganisms to the sink, faucet, counters, utensils and nearby foods. The chicken may look cleaner while the kitchen becomes harder to keep clean.
Vinegar, lemon and salt water are not safety substitutes
Soaking or rinsing may be part of a recipe or family tradition, but it is not a reliable pathogen-control step. USDA states that rinsing, washing or soaking is unnecessary for safety.
Heat is the reliable control
Chicken should reach at least 165 °F (73.9 °C) in the thickest appropriate area, measured with a food thermometer.

If you already washed it
You do not need to throw the chicken away. Clean and sanitize the sink, faucet, counters and anything reached by splashes, wash your hands and cook the chicken properly.
Washing raw chicken feels intuitive because rinsing is associated with cleaning, but poultry is one of the clearest cases where that instinct works against food safety. Adding vinegar, lemon juice or salt water does not make rinsing a dependable decontamination method. Marinades can change flavor or texture, but they should not be treated as sanitizers. If raw chicken has visible bone fragments or packaging liquid, use clean paper towel only when truly necessary, discard it immediately and then clean and sanitize the contacted surfaces rather than putting the bird under running water.
A better workflow starts before the package is opened. Keep raw chicken on the lowest refrigerator shelf in a leak-proof container, prepare salad or other ready-to-eat ingredients first, and use a separate cutting board if possible. After handling the poultry, wash hands with soap and water and clean knives, boards, counters and sink areas that may have been touched. Avoid touching spice jars or refrigerator handles with contaminated hands. These small habits interrupt cross-contamination much more effectively than trying to ‘wash away’ bacteria from the chicken itself.
Cooking completes the safety chain. Use a food thermometer in the thickest part and follow the appropriate safe minimum internal temperature rather than judging doneness only by color or clear juices. Once cooked, place the chicken on a clean plate, not the one that held it raw. The practical message is simple: raw chicken does not need a bath. Keep its juices contained, keep your hands and work surfaces clean, and let heat—not the kitchen tap—do the job of destroying pathogens.
Water does not remove the risk; it can move it
The problem with washing raw chicken is not that water makes the meat more dangerous. Splashes can move microorganisms from the surface to the sink, counter, utensils or ready-to-eat foods. Thorough cooking is the step designed to control that hazard. If there is visible package liquid, handle it carefully rather than turning the sink into a raw-meat washing station.
