Plastic is not one material category with one microwave rule: some containers are engineered for microwave use and others are not. The most reliable way to tell is to look for manufacturer labeling such as “microwave-safe” and follow any limits on temperature, time, or use. A container surviving one heating cycle without melting does not prove it was designed for repeated cooking.
USDA specifically lists cold-storage containers such as margarine, cottage-cheese, and yogurt tubs among items not intended for microwave cooking. Heat from the food can warp them, and they were not approved as cooking utensils.

FDA explains that microwaves pass through many plastics, but the container can become hot from the food inside. A fatty or sugary sauce can develop very hot local areas and expose the plastic to more demanding conditions than a cup of water.
That is why “does not absorb microwaves” is not the same as “safe at any temperature.” A vessel can soften, distort, or lose integrity because heat transfers from the contents.
Microwave labeling matters more than the recycling number
Recycling codes identify resin families and waste-stream categories; they are not, by themselves, a certification for microwave cooking. Two containers with the same recycling code can have different formulations, thicknesses, and intended uses.
Look for explicit use instructions on the base or package. If there are none and the container came from a single-use refrigerated product, move the food to microwave-safe glass, ceramic, or another labeled vessel.

USDA allows certain wraps made for microwave use but advises keeping the wrap from touching food and venting the cover so steam can escape. Steam itself can cause burns when the cover is removed, so open it away from your face and hands.
Do not use trash bags, grocery bags, foam trays, newspaper, or plastic that has already warped. If a container melts or changes shape during heating, stop using it for that purpose.
Reheating and cooking can stress a container differently
Thirty seconds of warming is not the same as ten minutes cooking a fatty dish. Even a microwave-safe container may carry restrictions. Follow its directions and avoid turning disposable packaging into long-term cookware simply because it seems convenient.
The practical rule: use plastic only when it is identified for microwave use and stay within the manufacturer’s conditions. When you are uncertain, microwave-safe glass or ceramic removes much of the guesswork.
