Cocoa is not naturally decaffeinated. It contains caffeine, but the amount in a spoonful is usually much smaller than the amount in a cup of coffee. Per-100-gram numbers can make cocoa look more caffeinated than the serving actually is.
How much is in a tablespoon?
Cocoa contains caffeine, but the amount that reaches a mug depends on how much powder is used and how the product was processed. A level teaspoon and a heaping tablespoon are not comparable, and hot cocoa made from pure cocoa powder is different from an instant mix in which cocoa may be only one ingredient. Published numbers are therefore better treated as approximate ranges. If caffeine needs to be controlled closely, information from the manufacturer of the specific powder or chocolate is more useful than one generic number copied across the internet.
The USDA Standard Reference entry for natural unsweetened cocoa powder lists about 230 mg caffeine per 100 g. Its household measure puts one tablespoon at about 5.4 g, which works out to roughly 12 mg caffeine.

Those are scale-setting calculations, not guaranteed values for every brand. A separate USDA entry for cocoa processed with alkali lists only about 78 mg/100 g, showing how much processing and source material can matter.
Why cocoa caffeine varies
Cocoa variety, origin, fermentation, roasting, and downstream processing all affect methylxanthines. A cocoa drink mix adds another variable: if only part of the powder is cocoa, each gram of the mix contains less cocoa-derived caffeine than a gram of 100% cocoa.
Theobromine is much more abundant
Theobromine helps explain why cocoa can feel different from coffee. It is another methylxanthine compound and is usually present in cocoa in a larger amount than caffeine. Its effects are not identical to, or as sharply stimulating as, a large caffeine dose, but it can contribute to the overall experience of chocolate products. Looking only at caffeine milligrams therefore misses part of the picture, especially for people who notice stimulant effects from chocolate even when the listed caffeine amount appears modest.
Cocoa’s dominant methylxanthine is theobromine. The same USDA natural-cocoa entry contains about 2,057 mg theobromine per 100 g, almost nine times its caffeine level. A 5.4 g tablespoon would provide roughly 111 mg.
Theobromine and caffeine are related compounds, but they do not have identical potency or effects. Their milligrams should not be added together as though they were caffeine equivalents.
How cocoa compares with coffee
EFSA uses rough guide values of 90 mg caffeine in a 200 mL cup of filter coffee and 80 mg in a 60 mL espresso. A drink made with 5–10 g of the USDA natural cocoa reference would contribute about 12–23 mg from the cocoa.
A 50 g bar of dark chocolate is listed by EFSA at roughly 25 mg as a broad guide, though cacao percentage and recipe change the number.
Dark chocolate, cocoa powder, and cacao nibs are not interchangeable sources either. All come from cacao, but they differ in cocoa solids, fat, sugar, and typical serving size, so caffeine and theobromine exposure changes. A small square of chocolate may contain less cocoa material than a drink made with several spoonfuls of powder, while a high-percentage bar concentrates more cocoa solids than milk chocolate. When comparing products, the cocoa percentage and actual portion are more useful than assuming that “darker” always means the same stimulant dose. Product formulation matters as much as the ingredient name.
Does cocoa at night matter?
Timing is individual. Many people can have a small amount of cocoa later in the day without noticing a sleep problem, while others respond to relatively modest caffeine doses. The recipe matters too: a drink may include chocolate, coffee, or several spoonfuls of cocoa. If you are trying to determine whether cocoa affects sleep, reduce the portion or move it earlier for several days and watch the pattern. Your own repeatable response is more informative than assuming that “low caffeine” automatically means “incapable of affecting sleep.”
It can if you are sensitive. Some people notice small doses; others do not. The total also includes coffee, tea, soda, energy drinks, chocolate, and medications or supplements that may contain caffeine.
The useful takeaway is simply that cocoa is low-caffeine relative to coffee by normal serving size, not caffeine-free.
