Is a peanut a nut or a legume?

Botanically, peanuts are legumes. Arachis hypogaea belongs to the Fabaceae family, alongside peas and beans, and its seeds develop inside pods underground. Nutritionally and culinarily, peanuts behave more like tree nuts because they are dry, energy-dense and rich in fat and protein, which is why grocery stores often group them with almonds and pistachios.

Peanuts sit in the nut aisle, roast like nuts and make a spread that behaves like almond butter. Yet botanically, a peanut is not a tree nut—it is a legume.

What makes it a legume?

The scientific name is Arachis hypogaea, and it belongs to the Fabaceae family. USDA’s National Peanut Research Laboratory explicitly places peanuts in the legume family along with peas and beans.

The plant flowers above ground. After fertilization, a peg grows downward and the fruit develops below the soil. The seeds inside that pod are the peanuts we eat.

Why does it act like a nut in the kitchen?

Botanical family does not dictate macronutrient composition. Raw peanuts are dry, oil-rich seeds, with a current USDA Foundation reference providing roughly 23 g protein and 43 g fat per 100 g.

That makes them much closer in culinary behavior to almonds and pistachios than to a bowl of cooked beans.

Why not compare them with cooked legumes?

Cooked lentils or chickpeas have absorbed substantial water, so their calories and protein are much less concentrated per 100 g. Peanuts are normally eaten as a dry oilseed. There is no contradiction between being a legume and being high in fat.

Allergy categories are separate again

Food-allergen labeling distinguishes peanuts from tree nuts in the United States. A peanut allergy therefore does not automatically mean a tree-nut allergy, although some people have both.

Botany, cooking, and allergy use different classification systems

Botanically, the peanut belongs to the legume family along with beans, lentils, peas, and soybeans. After pollination, the peanut plant pushes a peg into the soil, where the pod develops underground. The edible seeds mature inside that pod. A true botanical nut develops differently and is usually a dry fruit with a hard wall, so calling a peanut a nut is convenient culinary language rather than strict plant classification.

In the kitchen, peanuts behave more like tree nuts than like a bowl of cooked beans. They are low in water, high in fat, crunchy when roasted, and commonly eaten as snacks, butters, sauces, and toppings. Cooked lentils and kidney beans contain much more water and less fat per 100 g. That is why nutrition comparisons grouped by culinary use often place peanuts beside almonds, walnuts, or pistachios even though the family tree places them with legumes.

Allergy labeling adds another layer. Peanut allergy and tree-nut allergy are treated as distinct categories because the relevant proteins and patterns of cross-reactivity are not the same. Some people are allergic to peanuts but tolerate tree nuts; others have multiple allergies. Being botanically related to peas or beans does not mean a person with peanut allergy will necessarily react to every legume, although individual medical advice is important.

The best answer therefore depends on the question. If you are studying botany, peanut is a legume. If you are planning a trail mix or comparing snack nutrition, it makes practical sense to group it with nuts. If you are reading an allergy label, follow the allergen category explicitly named rather than the botanical family. One food can sit in different useful categories without any of them being a contradiction.

The legume connection is visible in the plant itself. Peanut flowers grow above ground, but after fertilization a peg bends downward and carries the developing pod into the soil. That unusual growth habit is called geocarpy. The shell we crack is the pod wall, and the individual kernels are seeds. This makes the botanical answer easier to remember than a list of classifications.

Nutritionally, grouping peanuts with nuts is still useful because recipe substitutions often follow texture and fat content. Replacing peanuts with cooked chickpeas in a brittle, cookie, or trail mix makes little sense, whereas almonds or cashews may work structurally. Scientific classification and culinary substitution answer different questions.

This also explains why food guides sometimes place peanuts in more than one group: the classification changes with the purpose of the guide.

So which answer is correct?

For botany: legume. For culinary use and many nutrition comparisons: grouping peanuts with nuts is practical because portions and macronutrient profiles are similar.

The same food can belong to one botanical family and a different practical grocery category without either description being wrong.
