Almonds and walnuts sit in the same grocery aisle and share the same typical serving size, but their nutrition is not a small variation on the same nut. Almonds contain more protein, fiber and vitamin E; walnuts have a much more polyunsaturated fat profile and provide ALA omega-3.

The calorie gap is only about 20 calories per serving, much less dramatic than comparing 579 calories per 100 g of almonds with 654 per 100 g of walnuts.
Using the same one-ounce portion also prevents a misleading comparison between handfuls of different sizes. With nuts, a few extra grams can quickly change calories and fat, so an equal serving isolates the difference between the foods themselves.
That serving basis is especially useful if you are deciding what to sprinkle on oatmeal, add to yogurt, or pack as a snack. A half-ounce of each is also a perfectly reasonable option: the comparison does not require choosing one nut forever.
For protein and fiber, almonds lead
Almonds provide roughly 1.7 g more protein and about 1.6 g more fiber per ounce. Relative to walnuts, that is around 40% more protein and close to twice the fiber.
That does not make almonds a protein equivalent to meat, fish or legumes; it simply makes them more protein-dense within this comparison.
The fiber difference can also matter in how the snack contributes to the day. An ounce of almonds adds a meaningful amount of fiber, especially when it replaces a low-fiber snack. Walnuts still contribute fiber, but their strongest nutritional distinction is elsewhere.
For a meal that already contains a strong protein source, the difference between 6 g and 4.3 g may be minor. If the nuts themselves are doing more of the work—such as in a small breakfast or snack—the almond advantage becomes more noticeable.
For ALA omega-3, walnuts are in another category
One ounce of walnuts provides roughly 2.5 g of alpha-linolenic acid. Almonds provide very little.
ALA is an essential omega-3, but it is not EPA or DHA. The body converts only a limited portion to these longer-chain forms.
Walnuts can therefore be a useful way to raise ALA intake without automatically replacing sources of EPA and DHA when those are part of the diet. This is a specific strength, not a reason to treat almonds as nutritionally inferior overall.
The important comparison is category-specific: walnuts are clearly the stronger ALA source among these two nuts. That statement is much more precise than saying walnuts are simply “healthier,” because almonds lead in several other nutrients.
Monounsaturated versus polyunsaturated
Almond fat is dominated by monounsaturated oleic acid—about 9 g per serving. Walnuts are dominated by polyunsaturated fat, with roughly 13 g per ounce.
Both profiles are mostly unsaturated; they are different, not opposites. The more useful question is not simply which nut has less fat, but what type of fat each provides and how it fits the rest of the diet.
If the rest of your meals already include olive oil and avocado, walnuts add a different fatty-acid pattern. If your diet already includes plenty of ALA-rich seeds, almonds may add more variety through their vitamin E and fiber profile.
Vitamin E creates another large difference
One ounce of almonds provides around 7 mg of vitamin E. Walnuts provide much less alpha-tocopherol, the form used for the vitamin E requirement.
If vitamin E is the specific target within nuts, almonds are far more concentrated. That advantage is practical because a normal serving contributes a substantial amount without requiring a much larger portion.
Again, this is a targeted advantage rather than a total-health score. A food can be stronger in one vitamin while another food contributes a fatty acid or mineral that it lacks.
Walnuts need slightly more storage care
Their high polyunsaturated-fat content makes walnuts more susceptible to oxidation and rancidity. Heat, light and oxygen speed the process.
Both nuts benefit from airtight storage, but walnuts especially benefit from cool storage or refrigeration when kept for longer periods. Paint-like, cardboard-like, or unusually bitter rancid flavors are quality changes, not normal features of walnuts.
Buying an amount you can finish while it still tastes fresh is often more useful than buying a large bag for a small price-per-ounce saving. If you do buy in bulk, dividing the nuts into smaller airtight portions limits repeated exposure to warm air.
So which is better?
For protein, fiber and vitamin E: almonds. For ALA omega-3 and a more polyunsaturated fat profile: walnuts. A varied diet can use both instead of turning a real nutritional difference into an unnecessary either-or decision.
Either serving is still a concentrated food at roughly 160–190 calories, so portion size matters more than declaring an absolute winner.
A practical approach is to choose according to the gap you actually want to fill: almonds when fiber, protein, or vitamin E is the priority; walnuts when ALA is. If there is no specific target, alternating or mixing them gives you both profiles without needing a permanent winner.
