Almonds can accurately be described as high in protein, high in fat and high in calories at the same time. They contain very little water, so nutrients are concentrated into a small weight.
The clean way to understand them is to separate the per-100-g comparison from a typical 1-ounce serving. That prevents a food-composition table from being mistaken for an automatic snack portion.

The visual jump from 579 calories to 164 calories shows why 100 g should not be read as if it were “a handful.” One hundred grams is more than 3.5 one-ounce servings.
A measured serving also makes packaged products easier to compare. Chocolate, honey, flavored coatings or added oil can move the finished food away from these plain-almond numbers even when almonds remain the main ingredient.
The fat is mostly monounsaturated
Of the roughly 50 g of fat per 100 g, about 32 g is monounsaturated and around 12 g polyunsaturated; saturated fat is roughly 3.8 g.
In a 1-ounce serving, that works out to about 9 g of monounsaturated fat and just over 1 g of saturated fat.
So “high in fat” is accurate but incomplete. Total fat explains much of the calorie density, while the fatty-acid profile is dominated by unsaturated fats rather than saturated fat.
Are almonds really a good protein source?
At 21 g per 100 g, protein concentration is substantial. Serving size changes the interpretation: one ounce provides about 6 g.
For comparison, one large egg also provides around 6–7 g of protein with roughly 70–80 calories. Cooked chicken breast contains about 31 g per 100 g. Almonds contribute useful protein but are not usually the most protein-efficient anchor for a meal.
They can still make a meaningful contribution. Added to yogurt, oatmeal or a snack, those 6 grams can complement other protein sources while also bringing fiber, unsaturated fat and micronutrients.
Fiber is one of their strongest features
At about 12.5 g per 100 g, almonds rank among the highest-fiber common nuts. One ounce provides roughly 3.5 g.
That is a useful contribution from a small serving, although legumes, fruit, vegetables and whole grains still do much of the work in a high-fiber diet.
Fiber is also one of the clearer ways almonds differ from other nuts. At equal weight they substantially outpace cashews and walnuts for fiber, even though those foods have their own nutritional strengths.
Vitamin E and magnesium stand out
One hundred grams of almonds provides roughly 25 mg of vitamin E and about 270 mg of magnesium. A 1-ounce serving supplies around 7 mg of vitamin E and 75–80 mg of magnesium.
Almonds also contain calcium, phosphorus, manganese and other minerals, though food value is never determined by one micronutrient number alone.
Vitamin E is particularly notable within the nut category. A normal serving can contribute a substantial amount without requiring a large portion.
Raw vs. roasted: the basic profile stays recognizable
Roasting lowers some moisture and can change small amounts of heat-sensitive compounds, but plain roasted almonds remain nutritionally close to raw almonds. Added salt, sugar, honey, chocolate or oil often creates the larger practical difference.
More intense roasting can also affect flavor and storage stability. Keeping roasted almonds tightly sealed and away from heat and light helps delay rancidity after opening.
The useful takeaway
One ounce provides about 164 calories, 6 g of protein, 3.5 g of fiber and 14 g of mostly unsaturated fat. Almonds are nutritionally rich and energy-dense at the same time; those are two parts of the same profile.
The most useful interpretation comes from a realistic serving and the role almonds play in the meal, not from treating the 100-gram comparison value as a default portion.
