Removing meat does not leave a protein vacuum. The bigger question is what else you eat and in what quantity. A tablespoon of peanut butter technically contains protein, but it is not equivalent to a cup of Greek yogurt or a serving of tempeh.
The following comparison uses realistic portions so foods are judged in the way they are actually eaten.

The table shows why serving size matters. Nuts are protein-containing foods, but a one-ounce serving adds about 6 g; lentils, tofu or dairy can provide three or four times as much in a normal meal-sized portion.
Plant foods can be major protein sources, not just side dishes
Soy foods, seitan and legumes work best when they are treated as the protein anchor of the meal. A bowl built around 1 cup of lentils can provide roughly 18 g of protein before bread, grains or toppings are counted. A 150 g serving of firm tofu can reach around 20 g or more, depending on the product.
Eggs and dairy make the target easier for vegetarians
Two eggs provide about 12–13 g, while strained yogurt and cottage cheese can reach roughly 20–25 g per substantial serving. That makes them useful for breakfast or snacks when the rest of the meal is not especially protein-rich.
Fish is not meat, but it changes the dietary pattern
If the goal is literally to avoid meat rather than follow a vegetarian diet, fish is another highly concentrated source: many cooked fish provide roughly 20–30 g protein per 100 g. A pescatarian pattern therefore has different options from a vegetarian or vegan one.
The practical rule
Choose one clearly substantial protein source at each main meal, then let grains, vegetables, nuts and seeds add to it. The most useful question is not whether a food contains protein, but whether the portion you actually eat contributes 5 g, 15 g or 25 g.
Plant proteins do not have to be paired perfectly at every meal
Beans, grains, nuts, and seeds have different amino-acid patterns, but a varied diet can complement those patterns across the day. You do not need to engineer a precise protein pairing on every plate. Soy foods and several other plant foods are especially well balanced, while overall variety matters more than chasing one supposedly perfect combination.
Total protein and adequate food intake remain the bigger determinants of whether needs are met.
Protein density and calorie density are not the same thing
Seitan, firm tofu, tempeh, strained yogurt, and cottage cheese can provide substantial protein in a moderate portion. Nuts and seeds add useful protein too, but they also carry more fat and calories, so they often work better as supporting ingredients when someone wants more protein without a very large energy increase.
Beans and lentils require more volume, yet they contribute fiber, folate, potassium, and satisfying carbohydrate at the same time.
Build meals instead of memorizing a top-ten list
A lentil bowl with rice and vegetables, tofu stir-fry, eggs on whole-grain toast, or yogurt with oats and seeds can all reach meaningful protein totals depending on portions. Thinking in meals makes it easier to distribute protein across the day without relying on one highly concentrated product.
For processed meat alternatives, packaged seitan, or high-protein dairy, check sodium, saturated fat, and ingredients alongside protein. A large protein number can be useful, but it does not automatically make one product the best everyday choice.
On a fully plant-based diet, several nutrients need planning beyond protein. Vitamin B12, iodine, iron, calcium, and omega-3 are not automatically solved by eating more tofu or beans. Keeping those goals separate prevents “high protein” from becoming shorthand for a complete diet. Protein is one important piece, while overall adequacy depends on variety and appropriate fortified foods or supplements where needed.
