Plant-based meat alternatives with the most protein

The highest-protein plant meat alternatives are usually TVP, seitan, tempeh, firm tofu and some formulated burgers. Normal portions of several provide roughly 17–20 g protein, while young jackfruit has only about 2–2.6 g/100 g. TVP looks exceptionally high per 100 g because it is measured dry before absorbing water.

“Plant-based meat alternative” can describe texture, cooking role or nutrition, and those are not the same thing. If protein is the priority, TVP, seitan, tempeh, firm tofu and some formulated burgers are far ahead of foods such as jackfruit. The comparison only works, however, if you do not rank a dry product against a water-rich one as though 100 g meant the same serving.

These are not identical serving sizes, so the point is scale rather than a mathematical ranking. A normal amount of seitan, tempeh, firm tofu or a protein-focused burger can provide roughly 17–20 g protein, while 100 g of young jackfruit provides only about 2–3 g.

Dry TVP looks extreme per 100 g because the water is missing

The plain TVP reference provides 12 g protein in 23 g dry product. That works out to just over 52 g/100 g dry, but TVP is normally rehydrated before eating. Water increases its weight without adding protein.

That is why comparing 100 g dry TVP with 100 g tofu exaggerates the difference. A more practical calculation is protein delivered: 23 g dry TVP already supplies 12 g protein, and about 38 g dry would provide roughly 20 g before hydration.

Seitan packs a lot of protein into a small portion

The packaged seitan used here lists 18 g per 57 g, or about 32 g/100 g. Its structure is largely wheat gluten, which explains the high protein concentration.

It is not suitable for people with celiac disease, and prepared products can contain substantial sodium. Protein quantity also is not the whole quality story: wheat protein is relatively low in lysine compared with soy.

Tempeh and tofu are closer than the ranking can make them look

The USDA tempeh reference provides about 20.3 g/100 g versus 17.3 g/100 g for firm tofu—a difference of about 3 g per 100 g, not an entirely different protein category.

Tofu varies with water content, so softer products can contain less protein per 100 g. Calcium-set tofu can also contribute substantial calcium. Tempeh retains the whole fermented soybean and is usually higher in calories and fat per 100 g.

Plant burgers depend on formulation

A current 113 g Beyond Burger lists 20 g protein, similar to roughly 100 g of tempeh in protein terms. But “veggie burger” does not guarantee that amount: patties made mainly from vegetables, potatoes or grains may provide much less.

For formulated products, check sodium, saturated fat, fiber, iron and vitamin B12 alongside protein.

Jackfruit replaces texture far better than protein

Young jackfruit contains roughly 2–2.6 g protein/100 g. Compared with the 17–20 g supplied by firm tofu, tempeh or a protein-focused burger, that is roughly seven to ten times less protein for the same weight.

Jackfruit can be excellent shredded in tacos or stews, but a meal using it as a meat substitute generally needs beans, tofu, tempeh or another protein source if protein replacement is part of the goal.

How to choose

For sheer protein density, seitan and dry TVP stand out, with the important caveat that TVP is measured before hydration. Tempeh, firm tofu and some formulated burgers provide substantial amounts in ordinary portions. Jackfruit belongs in a different nutritional category even when its texture is convincingly meat-like.

Then look beyond the protein number: sodium and saturated fat in formulated foods, calcium in some tofu, iron and B12 where relevant, fiber, and how the product fits the whole meal.
