If one tub of soy protein and one tub of pea protein both say “24 g protein,” the comparison is not finished. Protein per scoop matters, but so do amino-acid profile, digestibility, serving size, sodium, flavorings, and how the product fits the rest of the diet.
Protein concentration can be nearly identical
Commercial isolates commonly land around 75–90 g protein per 100 g, although the exact label should always take priority. A 30 g scoop may therefore provide about 22–27 g protein from either source.
A one- or two-gram difference per scoop is modest compared with larger differences in price, taste, added ingredients, or the amount of powder someone actually uses.
Soy usually has a stronger amino-acid profile
Soy supplies all indispensable amino acids in proportions that can produce high protein-quality scores. Reviews show that processing and the food matrix shift DIAAS values considerably, so “soy protein” does not have one universal score.
Pea protein is rich in lysine, while sulfur-containing amino acids such as methionine and cysteine often set its limiting amino-acid score. Soy products generally score strongly because their indispensable amino-acid pattern is well distributed.
Pea protein can still be highly digestible
A controlled human study of pea protein isolate reported mean real ileal amino-acid digestibility of 93.6%, compared with 96.8% for casein, with no significant difference in overall amino-acid digestibility. Its calculated DIAAS was 1.00.
That is a useful correction to the blanket claim that plant protein is poorly absorbed. Protein source, processing, and food matrix all matter.
What about leucine?
Values vary by product, but soy isolates often contain around 8 g leucine per 100 g protein while many pea isolates fall roughly in the 6–8 g range. A serving containing 25 g total protein might therefore provide around 1.5–2 g leucine from pea and close to 2 g from soy.
For sports goals, daily protein and how it is distributed across meals usually matter more than a tiny gap between two powders used once a day. A product that reliably delivers around 25 g protein with a reasonable amino-acid profile can fit well even if another powder has a slightly higher leucine percentage on paper.
Blends can complement amino-acid patterns
Pea is often combined with rice protein because the two amino-acid patterns complement one another: pea contributes lysine while rice contributes a different sulfur-amino-acid balance. The final score depends on the blend ratio and processing.
Check how much actual powder makes one serving. Cocoa, thickeners, flavors, sweeteners, or added carbohydrate can reduce the protein percentage of a finished product, so two visually similar scoops may deliver different amounts even when both packages emphasize the same plant source.
Allergy and tolerance can decide the choice
Soy is a major food allergen in the United States and must be declared accordingly. Pea can also cause allergy and cross-reactivity exists among legumes, but it is not regulated in exactly the same way as soy.
Protein isolates may provide 20–25 g protein with little fiber, while a cup of whole cooked peas or soy foods can provide several grams of fiber along with protein. A shake therefore does not reproduce the whole legume.
If one powder causes bloating, taste fatigue, or other discomfort, there is no nutritional requirement to force that source. Protein can be distributed among foods and different supplements; digestibility in real life includes whether a product is pleasant and easy enough to use consistently.
