Edamame and chickpeas are both legumes, but they divide their macronutrients quite differently. Edamame is soybean harvested while still green and carries more protein and fat; chickpeas are mature seeds that store much more starch and usually more fiber as well.
Edamame is more efficient when protein per calorie is the priority. Chickpeas bring more fiber and more complex carbohydrate, which can be exactly what a meal needs when energy matters too.

Edamame provides about 3 extra grams of protein and roughly 43 fewer calories per 100 grams. The biggest split is carbohydrate: chickpeas contain about three times as much because the mature seed stores far more starch.
A real serving puts the protein difference in context
About 150 grams of edamame provide roughly 18 grams of protein and 182 calories. The same amount of chickpeas provides around 13 grams of protein and 246 calories.
Both can make a meaningful contribution to a protein-rich meal. Edamame simply reaches a higher protein amount with less total energy, while chickpeas also supply substantially more carbohydrate.
Chickpeas have a clear fiber advantage
A 150-gram serving can provide roughly 11–12 grams of fiber from chickpeas versus about 7–8 grams from edamame. Both are strong sources, but this is a meaningful difference.
And those 27 grams of carbohydrate per 100 grams do not mean chickpeas are “sugary.” Much of that carbohydrate is starch and fiber rather than simple sugars.
Edamame contains more fat, mostly unsaturated
Edamame provides about 5 grams of fat per 100 grams, roughly twice as much as chickpeas. Most of it reflects soybeans’ naturally unsaturated fat profile.
That helps explain why edamame is not dramatically lower in calories despite having far fewer carbs: some of its energy comes from fat instead.
Soy protein has an especially complete amino acid profile
Soy contains all nine essential amino acids in favorable proportions. Chickpeas contain all essential amino acids too, although some, including methionine, are present in lower proportions.
That does not mean chickpeas must be eaten with rice at the same meal. A varied diet across the day readily complements amino acids from different plant foods.
Both contribute useful micronutrients
Edamame and chickpeas provide folate, iron, magnesium and potassium. The iron in both is nonheme and can be absorbed more effectively when the meal also includes a vitamin-C-rich food such as peppers, tomatoes, citrus or fruit.
Which should you choose?
If you want more protein with fewer calories and fewer carbs, edamame has the advantage. If you want more fiber and a starchier legume that still provides useful protein, chickpeas fit better.
They are not perfect rivals or exact substitutes: they are two legumes with different balances of protein, fiber, fat and starch, which is why they work well in different meals.
Food form changes how they are actually used. Shelled edamame is often eaten as a green vegetable-like side, snack, or bowl topping, while chickpeas readily become a large serving in curries, salads, stews, or hummus. A small scoop of hummus is not nutritionally equivalent to 150 grams of whole chickpeas because the portion is usually smaller and the recipe includes other ingredients.
If the meal already contains rice, bread, or potatoes, edamame can raise protein without adding as much extra starch. If the meal needs a base that contributes energy, fiber, and protein together, chickpeas can be especially useful. That functional difference is more helpful than trying to declare one universally superior.
They can also coexist in the same eating pattern without functioning as substitutes. Chickpeas fit naturally into many Mediterranean and Middle Eastern dishes, while edamame brings soy into bowls, stir-fries, and salads. When comparing labels, make sure both foods are in a comparable ready-to-eat state: dry chickpeas, cooked chickpeas, frozen edamame, and drained canned products should not be treated as if their 100-gram numbers describe the same amount of water.
