Edamame looks more like a green vegetable than a bean, but nutritionally it is soybean. That shows up immediately: it provides far more protein than most vegetables while still contributing a meaningful amount of fiber.
What shelled edamame provides

Why it has less protein than mature soybeans
Edamame is harvested before the soybean fully matures and dries. It contains more water than mature dry soybeans, so nutrients are less concentrated per 100 g.

Soy protein contains all essential amino acids
Like other soy foods, edamame contains all nine essential amino acids. That makes it an especially useful plant protein source.
