Bananas and potassium are almost synonymous in everyday nutrition advice, but the shorthand hides a more interesting ranking. Several fruits match or exceed bananas per 100 grams, and dried fruit can contain much more because water has been removed.
An approximate ranking per 100 grams
Using representative USDA FoodData Central values puts fresh fruit on the same comparison basis:

Avocado provides roughly 35% more potassium per 100 g than banana and about 4.5 times as much as apple. This table is for fresh fruit; dried fruit needs to be read separately because water loss concentrates the mineral.
Dried fruit is far more concentrated
The NIH lists 755 mg of potassium in 1/2 cup of dried apricots, 635 mg in 1/2 cup of prunes, and 618 mg in 1/2 cup of raisins. Removing water concentrates minerals—but also concentrates calories and sugars per bite.
So “highest potassium” does not automatically mean “best choice in unlimited amounts.” Serving size matters.
Serving size can change the ranking
A medium banana provides about 422 mg of potassium. A half cup of cantaloupe has about 214 mg, while a cup of orange juice can provide about 496 mg. Comparing foods only by 100 grams is useful scientifically, but not always how people actually eat them.
Fruit is only one source
Potatoes, beans and lentils, vegetables, dairy foods, nuts, fish, and meat also contribute meaningful potassium. NIH recommends meeting potassium needs through a varied diet rather than chasing one “superfood.” Current U.S. adequate intakes are 3,400 mg per day for adult men and 2,600 mg for adult women.
More potassium is not always appropriate
People with chronic kidney disease or those taking certain medications may need to limit potassium. In that situation, a “high-potassium fruit” ranking should not be treated as a recommendation to eat more without individualized medical advice.
For healthy adults trying to diversify potassium sources, avocado, guava, banana, kiwi, cantaloupe, and modest portions of dried fruit are all useful options.
Serving size, preparation, and the rest of the diet change the potassium picture
A per-100-gram ranking is useful for comparison, but people do not eat every fruit in identical amounts. A medium banana, a cup of melon, half an avocado, a few dried apricots and a large orange all represent very different weights. That means the fruit that ranks highest per 100 grams may not always deliver the most potassium in the portion you actually eat. If potassium intake matters to you, compare both the concentration and the usual serving. This is especially important with dried fruit, where water removal concentrates potassium, sugar and calories into a small volume.
Processing can matter as well. Whole fresh fruit usually keeps most of its potassium because the mineral is stable, but potassium can move into liquid when foods are cooked or soaked. That issue is more relevant to vegetables than to fruit eaten raw, yet canned fruit packed in liquid illustrates the same principle: some minerals can be present in the surrounding syrup or juice. Draining changes what ends up on the plate. Smoothies keep the whole edible portion and therefore usually retain the fruit’s potassium, whereas clear juices lose much of the fiber even though minerals remain.
For most healthy people, choosing a variety of fruits is a practical way to contribute potassium without obsessing over a single winner. Potatoes, beans, lentils, dairy foods, leafy greens and many other foods can also supply substantial amounts, so fruit is only one part of the total. People with kidney disease or anyone who has been told to restrict potassium need different advice: “more” is not automatically better in that context, and medication can also affect potassium balance. In those cases, use the limits and portion guidance provided by the healthcare team rather than a general high-potassium ranking.
Variety has another advantage: different fruits bring different nutrients alongside potassium. Citrus contributes vitamin C, avocado brings unsaturated fat, and berries contribute fiber and polyphenols. Choosing only the single highest-potassium fruit would miss that broader nutritional diversity.
If you are tracking intake, food-composition databases and package labels are better tools than memorizing one ranking. Record the portion you actually eat and remember that natural variation means the number is always an estimate rather than an exact laboratory result for the specific piece of fruit in your hand.
