Hulled hemp seeds, often sold as hemp hearts, are usually marketed for protein. Protein is only part of the picture. They are a concentrated combination of protein, polyunsaturated fat, magnesium, zinc, and plant omega-3. That combination also explains why a small serving contributes meaningful nutrition and a meaningful number of calories.

These numbers refer to hulled seed. Whole hemp seed retains a fibrous outer shell and can show a different nutrient profile.
The one-ounce column is usually the more useful kitchen number. One hundred grams is excellent for comparing nutrient concentration, but it represents more than 550 calories and is not a small topping.
About 32% protein by weight
At about 31.6 g protein per 100 g, hemp hearts are slightly above many pumpkin-seed references near 30 g and much higher than seeds valued primarily for fiber.
The serving-size reality is different: one ounce provides about 9 g protein. Reaching 30 g protein from hemp alone would require close to 95 g and more than 500 calories.
That makes hemp a strong protein booster rather than necessarily the most calorie-efficient centerpiece for a high-protein meal. Added to yogurt, soy foods, oatmeal or legumes, it can raise the protein total without asking the seeds to provide everything by themselves.
Most of the fat is unsaturated
About 49 g fat per 100 g explains much of hemp’s calorie density. Most of that fat is polyunsaturated, including both linoleic acid, an omega-6 fat, and ALA, an omega-3 fat.
ALA can be around 8–9 g per 100 g, so one ounce may provide roughly 2.2–2.5 g. That is meaningful but below the concentration in flax and chia.
The high polyunsaturated-fat content also has a storage implication. Hulled hemp hearts are more vulnerable to oxidation than a dry grain, so an airtight container and cool storage help protect flavor after opening.
Plant ALA is not equivalent to fish EPA and DHA
The omega-3 in hemp is primarily ALA. NIH notes that the body converts ALA to EPA and DHA only in limited amounts. Therefore, 2.4 g ALA from hemp should not be described as if it were 2.4 g EPA+DHA from fish.
ALA is still an essential fatty acid and a legitimate part of a varied diet. The point is simply to avoid treating three different omega-3 molecules as interchangeable gram for gram.
Magnesium is exceptionally concentrated
A USDA-derived reference for hulled hemp is around 700 mg magnesium per 100 g. One ounce is therefore roughly 196 mg. The same serving also provides around 2.8 mg zinc, along with phosphorus, iron, copper, and manganese.
That mineral density makes a small serving meaningful. At the same time, the calories still count, especially if hemp is being added on top of nuts, nut butter, seeds and other energy-dense foods in the same meal.
Is hemp a “complete protein”?
Hemp contains all indispensable amino acids, but protein quality is not a yes-or-no question based only on whether each amino acid is present. Their proportions and digestibility matter too.
In a varied diet, hemp works particularly well as an addition to oatmeal, yogurt, salads, or smoothies where it adds protein and minerals without needing to be the only protein source.
Hulled hemp also has a soft texture and mild flavor, so it can be used without soaking or cooking. That convenience makes it easy to add a measured amount to foods rather than treating it as a large standalone serving.
The useful takeaway
Hemp hearts are unusually protein-rich for a seed, but they are also calorie-dense. A one-ounce serving provides about 9 g protein, unsaturated fats, ALA, and a large amount of magnesium. That serving tells a more practical story than the impressive per-100-g numbers alone.
Think of hemp hearts as a concentrated add-on: a modest amount contributes a lot, and there is rarely a reason to turn the 100-gram comparison figure into an actual serving.
