A full unopened freezer can hold a safe temperature for roughly 48 hours without power; a half-full freezer is closer to 24 hours. Those are the emergency figures used by FDA and USDA. The difference is simple physics: a larger mass of frozen food stores more cold and warms more slowly.
Keep the door closed. Opening the freezer to check packages exchanges cold air for warmer room air and can shorten the very window you are trying to preserve. During a long outage, the goal is to keep frozen items packed together and disturb them as little as possible.
A full freezer lasts longer because frozen food acts as thermal mass
Frozen packages help keep neighboring packages cold. A freezer with large empty spaces contains less frozen mass and more air that can be replaced when the door opens. That is why emergency guidance distinguishes about 48 hours for a full unit from about 24 hours for one that is half full. Grouping packages together can help them retain cold, provided leaking raw meat is contained if thawing begins.
A chest freezer may lose less cold air when opened because dense cold air tends to remain low, but appliance design, insulation, room temperature and starting temperature all vary. A thermometer is more useful than assuming one freezer type will always reach a particular hour.
Ice crystals are useful evidence when the power comes back
If a food still contains ice crystals or measures 40°F (4°C) or below, FDA and USDA guidance says it can be refrozen or cooked. Refreezing can reduce quality even when safety is acceptable. Meat may lose more juice, vegetables can soften and frozen desserts may become coarse or icy as their original structure is damaged.
“Still feels cold” is not an accurate temperature test. Your hand cannot reliably distinguish 40°F from considerably warmer temperatures. A freezer thermometer and, when needed, a clean food thermometer provide a much stronger basis for deciding what to keep.
Fully thawed perishable food follows refrigerator-style safety rules
If meat, poultry, seafood, prepared meals or other perishable foods thaw completely and then remain above 40°F for hours, treat them as food that has lost temperature control. Refreezing does not make that history disappear. Freezing stops or greatly slows future microbial growth; it does not undo bacterial growth or toxins that may have developed while the food was warm.
Less perishable items such as bread and some baked goods are more forgiving, although their texture can still change. Melted ice cream is a special case: once fully melted, both quality and time-temperature history are difficult to judge, and emergency food-safety guidance generally favors discarding it rather than refreezing it.
A little preparation can greatly extend the useful cold reserve
If severe weather or a planned outage is expected, fill empty spaces with frozen water containers or gel packs. Leave expansion room in bottles because water expands as it freezes. Keep raw meat and seafood positioned so thawing juices cannot drip onto ready-to-eat foods.
Dry ice can extend freezer time, but it requires care: avoid bare-skin contact and provide ventilation because it releases carbon dioxide. For many households, ordinary ice, gel packs and an insulated cooler are simpler tools for moving the most valuable perishable foods if power will be out for a long time.
Do not move frozen food outdoors simply because the weather is cold. Sunlight can raise temperatures, outdoor conditions fluctuate, and packages can be exposed to animals or contamination. It is safer to make or buy ice and keep the food inside a controlled container.
The memorable rule is 48 hours full, 24 hours half full, with the door closed. After that, evaluate food package by package. Ice crystals or a measured temperature of 40°F or below support cooking or refreezing; a perishable food that has spent too long warm should be discarded.
