Whole kernels last longer than pieces
Cutting exposes more surface area to oxygen. UC Davis estimates diced nuts may have roughly half the storage life of intact kernels under similar conditions.
Nuts in the shell can also last 25–50% longer than shelled kernels, depending on nut type and packaging.
Packaging matters
Use an airtight, moisture-resistant container. Nut fats readily absorb surrounding odors, so open nuts stored next to garlic or strongly scented foods can develop off-flavors without being microbiologically spoiled.
Limit condensation when moving frozen nuts
