Calling an entire animal species “low calorie” is too broad. In meat, the cut and its fat content matter more than whether the label says chicken, pork, beef or turkey. A lean pork cut can contain less energy than a fattier piece of chicken with skin.

These are specific database entries in comparable cooked states. They should not be applied to every turkey, pork, beef or chicken product.
Why fat raises calories so quickly
Protein and carbohydrate provide about 4 kcal per gram, while fat provides about 9 kcal per gram. If one cut contains 15 g fat per 100 g and another contains 4 g, the 11 g difference alone contributes roughly 99 kcal.
Raw and cooked values are not interchangeable
Meat loses water during cooking. Even without added oil, 100 g of cooked meat often looks more calorie- and protein-dense than 100 g raw because there is less water left. A fair ranking compares foods in the same state.
Skin changes poultry substantially
Skinless chicken and turkey breast are very lean. Keeping the skin raises fat and energy, which is why a skin-on thigh can sit far above a trimmed breast.
Cooking method can erase the difference
Breading, frying or adding a fatty sauce changes the final dish. Ten grams of absorbed oil adds about 90 kcal, enough to move a very lean cut into a much higher-calorie range.
Leanness, cooking method and water content explain most calorie differences
Calories in meat are driven largely by fat because fat provides more than twice as much energy per gram as protein. A very lean cut of poultry, pork or beef can therefore be relatively low in calories, while a fatty cut from the same animal can be much higher. Species alone is a poor shortcut. Skinless chicken breast and chicken wings are both chicken, but the skin, fat and cooking method create a much larger difference than the animal name on the package.
Raw and cooked values also should not be mixed casually. Cooking drives off water and can render some fat. If a lean steak loses a lot of water, 100 grams of the cooked meat may contain more calories than 100 grams raw simply because nutrients are more concentrated. Frying or cooking in added oil can raise energy intake further, while grilling may allow some rendered fat to drip away. Compare like with like: cooked with cooked, raw with raw, and preferably the same cut.
Among practical choices, skinless poultry breast, very lean pork cuts and lean beef cuts can all fit a lower-calorie meal. Ground meat needs closer label reading because the fat percentage varies widely. “Ground turkey” is not automatically leaner than every ground beef product; a high-fat turkey blend can contain more calories than an extra-lean beef blend. The package’s fat percentage and nutrition panel are more informative than the species name.
Processed meats add another dimension. Deli turkey or ham may be fairly low in calories but can be high in sodium, and sausages can combine meat with substantial fat. A ranking that considers only calories may therefore put a highly processed product above a less processed cut without capturing the full nutritional trade-off. Protein, sodium, saturated fat, iron and portion size may all matter depending on the meal.
Finally, the portion on the plate often matters more than a 10- or 20-calorie difference per 100 grams. A 150-gram serving of a slightly leaner meat can still provide more energy than a 90-gram serving of a somewhat fattier one. Build the comparison around the serving you actually eat and the cooking fat used. “Lowest calorie” is useful if energy density is your priority, but it should not become the only definition of a good protein food.
The practical takeaway
There is no universal “lowest-calorie meat”; there are leaner and fattier cuts. In comparable cooked examples, several lean cuts fall roughly between 135 and 165 kcal per 100 g while still providing about 26–31 g protein.
