A label saying 20 g of protein tells you how much protein is present, not how its essential amino acids line up with human needs or how well those amino acids are digested. PDCAAS and DIAAS are attempts to add that missing dimension.
Both methods start from the same broad idea: a protein is more useful for meeting human needs when it provides indispensable amino acids in suitable proportions and those amino acids are well digested. The methods differ in where digestibility is measured and how much detail they preserve.
PDCAAS combines a limiting amino acid with overall digestibility
PDCAAS stands for Protein Digestibility-Corrected Amino Acid Score. It first compares the most limiting essential amino acid in a protein with a human requirement pattern, then adjusts the score using an estimate of overall protein digestibility.
The classic method uses fecal nitrogen digestibility, measured after material has passed through the large intestine as well as the small intestine. Results are usually expressed from 0 to 1.00, with higher calculated values truncated to 1.00.
That makes the score easy to use, but it applies one overall digestibility correction to the protein rather than following the digestibility of every indispensable amino acid separately. Differences among individual amino acids can therefore be hidden.
Truncation hides differences above the reference target
Imagine two proteins with untruncated calculated scores of 1.05 and 1.25. Under a 1.00 cap, they both appear as 1.00 versus 1.00. The score no longer shows that one provides a larger surplus of digestible indispensable amino acids relative to the reference pattern.
That may be adequate for asking whether a protein meets a threshold, but it loses information when comparing ingredients or designing complementary protein mixtures.
A score of 1.00 also does not mean the entire food is nutritionally perfect or that a normal serving supplies enough protein. PDCAAS is about the quality of the protein fraction, not the total amount of protein on the plate.
DIAAS measures each amino acid before the colon
DIAAS stands for Digestible Indispensable Amino Acid Score. Instead of applying one digestibility number to the whole protein, it estimates ileal digestibility for each indispensable amino acid—how much has disappeared by the end of the small intestine, before colonic microbes can alter nitrogen compounds.
The digestible amount of each amino acid is compared with an age-appropriate reference pattern, and the lowest ratio determines DIAAS. Scores can remain above 100, preserving information that PDCAAS truncation can hide.
This is especially useful when identifying the amino acid that truly limits a protein or evaluating how two ingredients may complement each other. It gives more resolution, but it is still a protein-quality measure rather than a total-food score.
Why FAO recommended DIAAS
FAO’s 2013 expert consultation recommended DIAAS as the preferred method because it treats amino acids individually, uses ileal rather than fecal digestibility, and addresses several recognized PDCAAS limitations.
Adoption is not instantaneous. Ileal digestibility data are more difficult and expensive to generate for many foods, and regulatory systems do not change at the same pace as scientific recommendations. In the United States, PDCAAS remains embedded in how corrected protein amounts can be calculated for certain Nutrition Facts labeling situations.
That is why older and newer publications can use different systems. A PDCAAS value is not automatically meaningless because DIAAS exists; the important step is knowing which method produced the number before comparing it with another score.
A high protein score is not a total-health score
PDCAAS and DIAAS evaluate protein quality. They do not directly score fiber, sodium, saturated fat, omega-3 fats, vitamins, minerals, processing, price, or environmental impact.
A bean protein can score below a dairy protein because of a limiting amino acid and lower digestibility, while the beans provide fiber that an isolated dairy protein does not. That is not a contradiction; the two scores are answering different questions.
Quantity matters too. A food with an excellent score but only 3 g protein in the serving does not play the same role as a food providing 20 g. Protein quality and protein amount are complementary pieces of information.
A mixed diet can outperform the score of one ingredient
Foods are eaten together. A protein relatively low in lysine can be complemented by another food that supplies more lysine, improving the amino-acid balance of the mixture. One ingredient’s score therefore does not predict the quality of an entire varied diet.
When you see a protein-quality number, ask three things: which method was used, which age reference pattern was used, and whether the value describes a whole food or a purified protein ingredient. It is also worth checking whether the number applies to one ingredient or a blend, because the limiting amino acid can change when proteins are combined.
With that context, PDCAAS and DIAAS are useful tools rather than mysterious grades. Without it, a precise-looking score can suggest more certainty than the method actually provides.
