Put plain yogurt and plain milk kefir side by side and the basic nutrient gap is often smaller than the fermentation gap. Both start with milk and retain much of its protein, calcium, phosphorus, and B vitamins.
Protein and calcium are often similar
Conventional plain yogurt commonly provides about 3.5–5 g protein per 100 g. Many milk kefirs fall near 3–4 g per 100 g. Calcium is also often in a similar neighborhood, roughly 110–150 mg per 100 g, although brand and concentration matter.
The comparison changes if kefir is compared with strained Greek yogurt, which can contain roughly twice as much protein per 100 g because more whey has been removed.
Fermentation is the biggest difference
Classic yogurt relies mainly on Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus. Traditional kefir grains contain a more complex community of lactic-acid bacteria, acetic-acid bacteria, and yeasts.
What about lactose?
Both ferment some of the milk’s lactose. Kefir can contain less lactose than the milk it started from, but it should not automatically be considered lactose-free. Final levels vary by culture, fermentation time, and product.
The label still matters
Sweetened kefir or flavored yogurt can contain far more sugar than plain versions. Compare added sugar, protein, fat, and serving size rather than relying on the product name.
For protein and calcium, both can play similar roles. For fermentation diversity, kefir is more complex; for maximum protein, the specific yogurt style may matter more than choosing yogurt versus kefir.
The fermentation cultures are different, and kefir is usually more diverse
Plain yogurt is commonly produced with specific bacterial starter cultures that acidify milk and create its familiar thick texture. Kefir is made with a more complex community of bacteria and yeasts traditionally organized in kefir grains. Commercial products vary, but kefir generally contains a broader mix of microorganisms than standard yogurt. That does not make every kefir automatically “better”; the organisms, viable counts, storage, and serving size all affect what reaches the consumer.
Both foods can be sold pasteurized after fermentation or with live cultures, so label wording matters. A product labeled as containing live and active cultures gives more useful information than assuming every cultured dairy food contains the same microbes.
Protein and calories depend on straining, fat level, and added sugar
Ordinary plain yogurt and drinkable kefir can have similar calorie ranges, but strained yogurts such as Greek yogurt often contain considerably more protein because water and whey are removed. Kefir is usually thinner and may be consumed in larger portions. Full-fat versions contain more energy than low-fat versions, while flavored products can add enough sugar to change the comparison substantially.
For a fair comparison, match serving sizes and look at protein, added sugar, saturated fat, and calcium on the label. Choosing plain products and adding fruit gives more control over sweetness while preserving the fermented dairy base.
Lactose tolerance is individual for both foods
Fermentation reduces some lactose because microbes use it as a substrate. Many people with mild lactose malabsorption therefore tolerate yogurt or kefir better than an equivalent amount of milk, but neither food is guaranteed to be lactose-free. Portion size, bacterial cultures, individual tolerance, and whether the product has added milk solids can all influence symptoms.
Kefir can be useful as a beverage, smoothie base, or marinade, while yogurt works well as a spoonable breakfast, sauce, dip, or dessert base. The better choice is often the one that fits the meal, provides the desired protein level, and is available without excessive added sugar. Including both is also a reasonable way to vary fermented foods.
Storage affects both taste and microbial viability. Keep yogurt and kefir refrigerated, close containers promptly, and avoid drinking directly from a large bottle if it will be stored for several more days. Separation of liquid can be normal and often disappears after stirring, whereas mold, a swollen container, or an unexpectedly putrid odor is a reason to discard the product rather than simply mixing it back together.
Non-dairy cultured products require a separate label check because their protein and calcium can differ dramatically from dairy yogurt or kefir. A coconut-based cultured product may be low in protein unless it is fortified, while soy-based versions can be closer. Fermentation alone does not make two products nutritionally equivalent.
