Sardines are small fish with an unusually concentrated nutrition profile. A drained can with edible bones combines substantial protein, EPA and DHA, and far more calcium than a boneless fish fillet.

A small can already provides substantial protein
An 85 g drained serving at 24.5 g protein/100 g provides about 20.8 g protein. That is comparable to many larger servings of other meat or fish foods.
The omega-3 is direct EPA and DHA
NIH lists about 1.19 g EPA+DHA in 3 oz of canned sardines in tomato sauce, drained. That converts to roughly 1.40 g per 100 g.
This is far more than lean hake, which contains only tenths of a gram, although below some Atlantic salmon references above 2 g/100 g.
Why sardines are so high in calcium
The answer is the bones. Canning heat softens the small skeleton enough to eat. Consuming those bones means consuming their mineral content, allowing bone-in entries to reach roughly 300–400 mg calcium/100 g.
If the bones are removed, much of that calcium advantage disappears. Sardine flesh alone is not responsible for several hundred milligrams.
Sardines also supply B12, vitamin D, and selenium
Oily fish are natural B12 foods, and sardines can also provide vitamin D and selenium. Exact amounts vary with species and product, but micronutrient density is substantial.
Sodium depends on the can
Fresh sardines contain natural sodium, while canned products often include added salt. Several hundred milligrams sodium per 100 g is common. Comparing labels is the best way to find a lower-sodium option when that matters.
Does oil-packed mean much higher calories?
Sardines already contain their own fat. Oil-packed versions can be higher in calories if additional packing oil remains with the fish. Ten extra grams of oil equals about 90 calories; draining removes free oil but may not remove all oil retained by the fish.
The edible bones are what make canned sardines unusual in a calcium comparison. In many cans the bones have softened during processing enough to be eaten with the fish, so the calcium that would be discarded with the skeleton of a larger fillet becomes part of the serving. Boneless or skinless sardine products can therefore have a very different calcium value even when their protein is similar.
Oil packing needs a little context too. The nutrition label reflects the product as sold according to its stated serving and draining instructions. Draining removes some surface oil but does not turn an oil-packed sardine into the same product as one packed in water. If calorie intake matters to the comparison, use the label of the exact can rather than transferring a number from a different packing medium.
Sodium varies even more between brands and sauces. Tomato sauce, brine, flavored oils and “no salt added” versions can produce large differences. Rinsing may remove some surface salt in certain products, but the label remains the best starting point because sodium is not determined by the fish species alone.
A practical serving may be one small can rather than 100 g exactly. Converting the per-100-g values to the drained weight you actually eat makes the numbers easier to interpret. Sardines remain notable because one compact serving can combine protein, preformed marine omega-3 fats and, when the bones are present, a meaningful amount of calcium.
Bone-in sardines are also a good example of why edible portion matters. The calcium figure is high because the softened skeleton is consumed rather than discarded, while protein and fat come largely from the flesh. If you remove visible bones at home, the calcium you actually eat may be lower than the value listed for the intact product. The same logic applies to draining sauce or oil: what remains on the plate is what contributes to the meal. For comparisons with tuna, salmon or other canned fish, match drained weight, packing medium and whether bones are eaten. A label-based, serving-level comparison is more informative than ranking fish by one headline nutrient.
