An onion that is watery or slimy inside has more than a freshness issue. A single dry damaged layer may be removed, but multiple soft, leaking, moldy, or foul-smelling layers are a reason to toss the bulb.
A dry surface scar can often be trimmed. A wet, sunken, moldy, or leaking soft spot may extend into the flesh; if the tissue underneath is soft, water-soaked, or bad-smelling, discard the squash.
Sprouted seeds inside squash are a maturity phenomenon called vivipary, not automatic spoilage. If the flesh is firm and normal-smelling with no mold, wet rot, or extreme bitterness, it can still be eaten.

A bitter eggplant is often simply overmature. Large seeds, spongy flesh, and dull skin support that explanation; discard it if bitterness comes with wet rot, slime, mold, or an off odor.

Whole grain does not mean brown, seeded, or multigrain. A whole grain retains the bran, germ, and endosperm in the same relative proportions as the original kernel, even when it has been milled, cracked, or flaked.
