Quinoa and amaranth often sit in the same “ancient grain” aisle because both are cooked like grains without being grasses, but they behave quite differently in a bowl. Per 100 g cooked, quinoa is about 120 calories, 4.4 g protein, and 2.8 g fiber; cooked amaranth is roughly 102 calories, 3.8 g protein, and about 2 g fiber. The macro differences are modest. Texture and some minerals separate them more clearly.

Amaranth and quinoa are both pseudocereals, but their cooked textures and nutrient patterns are distinct enough that the choice does not have to be framed as a winner. Quinoa cooks into separate seeds with a light bite, while amaranth releases more starch and becomes creamier or porridge-like. That difference changes how much water a recipe needs and what dishes suit each grain. A nutrition table matters, but texture often determines which food is realistic to use regularly.

Quinoa has only about 18 more calories and 0.6 g more protein per 100 g. In a 180 g cooked portion, that works out to roughly 216 calories and 7.9 g protein from quinoa versus 184 calories and 6.8 g from amaranth. That is not a large enough protein gap to drive the whole decision.
Amaranth’s mineral profile is a more useful distinction
On a cooked-weight basis, both foods are still predominantly sources of carbohydrate, with moderate protein rather than the amounts found in concentrated protein foods. Their amino-acid profiles are useful for plant-based eating, but calling either one ‘high protein’ can exaggerate what a normal bowl provides. Pairing them with legumes, dairy, eggs, tofu, fish, or another protein source creates a more substantial meal. This context is more informative than comparing a single gram of protein between the two.
Amaranth is notable for calcium, iron, and magnesium. Quinoa also contributes iron, magnesium, and phosphorus, so neither wins every micronutrient. Values also shift dramatically between dry and cooked foods because both grains absorb water.
That water effect matters. Comparing dry amaranth with cooked quinoa would make amaranth look far more nutrient-dense almost across the board, but the comparison would not represent equivalent portions.
Good protein quality does not mean high protein quantity
Both quinoa and amaranth contain all essential amino acids and have a relatively favorable lysine profile compared with many cereal grains. That describes protein quality. It does not turn either one into a concentrated protein food.
A cooked serving generally contributes only around 7–8 g protein. If protein is a major goal for the meal, pair either pseudocereal with lentils, beans, soy foods, eggs, dairy, or another main protein source.
Texture may matter more than the nutrition panel
Minerals are one of the more interesting differences, but preparation affects the final numbers. Amaranth can be a useful source of iron, magnesium, and manganese, while quinoa also contributes magnesium, phosphorus, and other micronutrients. Which one should you choose?
For practical use, quinoa often fits salads, grain bowls, and side dishes because it stays relatively separate. Amaranth works especially well in breakfast porridges, thick soups, patties, or dishes where a cohesive texture is useful. Both can broaden whole-grain variety and both are naturally gluten-free as ingredients, although people with celiac disease still need products protected from cross-contact. Choosing according to recipe, taste, price, and availability is usually more sensible than treating their small nutritional differences as decisive.
Choose quinoa when you want a fluffy grain-like base and amaranth when you want a creamier texture or a different mineral mix. The nutritional differences are too small for a universal winner; they are complementary foods rather than better and worse versions of the same thing.
