Energy differs by only a few calories and carbohydrate by roughly one gram. The gap that changes the meal is protein and fiber: lentils provide about 4.6 grams more protein and more than 5 grams extra fiber per 100 grams cooked.

Lentils also contain all essential amino acids, although legumes are generally relatively lower in methionine than some other foods. You do not need to combine complementary plant proteins in every bite; a varied eating pattern across the day can provide the required amino acids.

Both statements can therefore be true at once: quinoa has an interesting protein profile for a grain-like staple, and lentils still deliver substantially more protein at the same cooked weight. Keeping quality and quantity separate prevents the “complete protein” label from becoming misleading.

Lentils can anchor the protein; quinoa is usually the base

A 180–200 gram serving of lentils can make a substantial contribution to both protein and fiber, allowing the legume to function as the main component of a bowl, soup, or salad. The high fiber amount also contributes bulk and can support fullness, although individual gastrointestinal tolerance varies.

The same weight of quinoa provides less of each nutrient and functions more like rice, couscous, or bulgur: a carbohydrate-rich foundation with some protein, fiber, and minerals. If your goal is a clearly high-protein meal, quinoa usually benefits from a dedicated protein source alongside it.

Tolerance and dietary needs can also decide the choice. Some people build legume portions gradually because large servings cause digestive discomfort. Others value quinoa because it is naturally gluten-free or because its lighter texture fits a particular meal. Nutrient rankings are useful information, not instructions to ignore those differences.

You do not have to choose one or the other

Quinoa and lentils work especially well together. Quinoa contributes separate, grain-like pieces while lentils add protein and fiber. Vegetables, herbs, olive oil, nuts, seeds, or a flavorful dressing can turn that combination into a balanced bowl without asking either ingredient to provide everything.

You can also use them at different meals: quinoa as a side at lunch and lentils as the legume base of dinner. Variety brings different textures and makes the nutrition comparison more useful than treating one food as a permanent replacement for the other.

If the specific question is which provides more protein and fiber by cooked weight, lentils win clearly. If you want a versatile gluten-free grain substitute with a favorable amino-acid pattern, quinoa serves a different purpose. Their similar calories and carbohydrates make the contrast in protein and fiber especially informative.
