How much protein is in spirulina?

Dried spirulina is highly concentrated in protein: the USDA reference contains 57.5 g per 100 g and reviews often report roughly 50–70% dry weight. A 7 g serving, however, provides only about 4 g protein; reaching 20 g would require about 35 g of the reference powder.

“Spirulina is 60% protein” sounds as though a spoonful could replace a protein shake. The percentage is real for many dry products, but the serving is tiny compared with 100 grams.

The per-100-gram number

The USDA dried-spirulina reference contains 57.47 g protein per 100 g. Reviews commonly report about 50–70% protein by dry weight across different strains and growing conditions.

That makes spirulina unusually protein-dense by weight. It does not make 100 g a typical serving.

A tablespoon-sized amount can add a few grams to yogurt or a smoothie. It usually does not function as the main 20–30 g protein anchor of a meal.

Does spirulina have all essential amino acids?

Yes. USDA composition data include all nine essential amino acids, and research reviews describe relatively good digestibility for properly processed spirulina biomass.

That is useful, but the total amount still controls what reaches the diet. Four grams of spirulina protein remains four grams, even when its amino-acid profile is broad.

Why comparing 100 g can mislead

Cooked beans contain lots of water. Cooked lentils, for example, are roughly 9 g protein per 100 g, which looks far below spirulina. But a 200 g bowl provides around 18 g protein, while 7 g spirulina provides about 4 g.

So spirulina wins on concentration; ordinary protein foods often win on protein actually eaten in one sitting.

When the protein can be useful

Spirulina can supplement a meal that already contains other protein and is convenient when a compact dry ingredient is useful. Its strong flavor often limits how much people want to add.

The best shortcut is to read the label and calculate from your serving. For the USDA reference, multiplying grams of spirulina by about 0.57 estimates grams of protein.

Protein percentage is high because spirulina is dry

Dried spirulina contains little water, so protein makes up a large share of its weight. That is why the per-100-gram figure looks similar to or higher than many protein foods. Fresh foods such as yogurt, tofu, fish, or meat contain much more water, making direct weight-for-weight comparisons visually dramatic but not very practical.

A typical spirulina serving of a few grams contributes only a few grams of protein. To obtain 20 grams of protein from spirulina alone would require a much larger amount than most people use as a supplement or food ingredient.

Protein quality and protein quantity are separate ideas

Spirulina contains all essential amino acids, but that does not mean a tiny serving functions like a complete meal-sized protein source. Total dose, digestibility, and the amino-acid pattern of the whole diet still matter. Legumes, soy foods, dairy, eggs, fish, meat, or larger portions of other protein foods usually make a much bigger contribution to daily protein intake.

Spirulina is better viewed as a concentrated ingredient that adds some protein rather than as the foundation of a high-protein diet.

Choose a tested product if you use it regularly

Algal supplements can vary in purity and manufacturing controls. Products from reputable manufacturers that identify the organism and test for contaminants provide more confidence than anonymous powders with little traceability. The nutritional label should also make the serving size clear so the protein claim can be interpreted realistically.

That perspective also prevents misleading comparisons with protein powder. A whey, soy, or pea protein product is designed to deliver a large protein dose in one serving; spirulina is usually taken in much smaller amounts for its overall nutrient profile or simply as an ingredient. Calling both “high in protein” can be technically true per 100 grams while hiding a very different real-world dose.

If protein intake is the goal, calculate grams per normal serving and cost per meaningful protein dose. Spirulina may contribute, but it is rarely the most efficient primary protein source.

Using spirulina in a smoothie can make the serving feel larger because it colors and flavors the entire drink, but the protein contribution still comes from the grams of powder added. A smoothie with milk, soy beverage, yogurt, or protein powder may owe most of its protein to those ingredients rather than to the spirulina. Reading the recipe as a whole prevents the bright green color from creating an exaggerated impression of its contribution.
