Spirulina vs. chlorella: what is the difference?

Spirulina is a filamentous cyanobacterium; chlorella is a single-celled green microalga. Both can provide roughly 50–70% protein by dry weight, but chlorella has a tougher cell wall that often needs disruption for digestibility. Spirulina and chlorella are sold as nearly interchangeable green powders, but they are biologically different organisms. Spirulina is a cyanobacterium; chlorella is a eukaryotic green microalga.

Both can be very high in protein

Reviews place both spirulina and Chlorella vulgaris in roughly the 50–70% protein-by-dry-weight range under some growing conditions. Both contain essential amino acids.

Serving size still matters. A 5 g powder that is 60% protein provides about 3 g protein, regardless of how striking the percentage looks on a dry-weight chart.

Cell walls create a practical difference

Spirulina lacks the tough cellulose-rich wall associated with many green microalgae. Chlorella has a more resistant cell wall that can reduce access to intracellular nutrients.

That is why products often advertise “cracked cell wall” chlorella. Mechanical disruption is intended to improve nutrient accessibility rather than merely change texture.

The pigments are different

Spirulina is famous for blue phycocyanin alongside chlorophyll, giving it a blue-green color. Chlorella is especially chlorophyll-rich and appears a more straightforward deep green.

Pigment concentration can be interesting technologically and nutritionally, but color is not a clinical health score.

Vitamin B12 is not the same story

Inactive B12 analogs dominate in spirulina. Some studied chlorella products have contained biologically active cobalamin, but amounts differ with strain, culture, and product.

Anyone depending on B12—especially on a vegan diet—should use a source with a dependable labeled dose instead of assuming all chlorella supplies enough.

Other nutrients depend heavily on the product

Iron, carotenoids, fatty acids, and minerals vary with species, growth medium, harvest, and drying. Comparing two actual labels is often more meaningful than declaring one generic powder nutritionally superior.

Supplement quality matters more than the color of the powder

Spirulina and chlorella are often grouped together as “algae,” but biologically they are not the same. Spirulina products are made from cyanobacteria, commonly Arthrospira species, whereas chlorella is a true green microalga. Both are dried into powders or tablets and can be nutrient-dense by weight, yet the amounts people actually consume are usually only a few grams. A impressive value per 100 grams can therefore exaggerate what a normal serving contributes.

Protein is a good example. Dry spirulina can be more than half protein by weight, which sounds enormous, but a 5-gram teaspoon-sized serving supplies only a few grams. Chlorella also contains substantial protein, but neither product is normally eaten in portions comparable with beans, tofu, eggs, fish or yogurt. They can add nutrients to a diet; they are not automatically efficient substitutes for ordinary protein foods when cost and realistic serving size are included.

Vitamin B12 claims require particular caution. Some algae and cyanobacteria contain corrinoid compounds that laboratory tests may count as B12-like material, but not all are biologically active for humans. Spirulina is not considered a reliable B12 source for preventing deficiency. People following vegan diets should rely on established B12-fortified foods or supplements rather than assuming a green powder covers the requirement because a generic nutrient table lists “B12.”

Contamination control is another practical difference between a food and a concentrated supplement. Poor-quality cyanobacterial products can be contaminated with microcystins, while supplements in general may vary in heavy metals, microbes or actual ingredient content. Buying from a manufacturer that provides credible third-party testing and lot information is more meaningful than choosing whichever label uses stronger words such as “detox,” “cleanse” or “superfood.” Those marketing terms do not verify purity.

Chlorella can contain appreciable vitamin K, so people using vitamin-K-sensitive anticoagulant medicines need individualized guidance rather than suddenly adding large amounts. Both products may also cause digestive effects in some users. For most people, the simplest comparison is culinary and practical: spirulina has a strong blue-green flavor and disperses readily in smoothies, while chlorella has a grassy green profile. Choose only if you enjoy or need the product, not because either powder is required for a healthy diet.

Powder color is not a purity test either. Spirulina can range from blue-green to deep green depending on pigments and processing, while chlorella is typically greener because of chlorophyll. A brighter shade does not prove higher protein, fewer contaminants or better absorption. Certificate-of-analysis information, reputable manufacturing and transparent ingredient lists are stronger quality signals than appearance.

Which should you choose?

Both can add protein in small amounts. Spirulina generally needs less cell-wall processing; chlorella has its own pigment profile and some products may provide active B12 measured specifically.

There is no universal winner. Manufacturing quality, testing, dose, and what you want from the product matter more than the “superfood” category.
