Canned tuna is convenient, lean, and protein-dense, but “tuna” is not one mercury level. Canned light and albacore come from different tuna populations and are placed in different FDA/EPA categories.
Canned light and albacore are not equivalent
FDA/EPA classifies canned light tuna, which most often includes skipjack, as a Best Choice. Albacore or white tuna is a Good Choice and typically contains about three times as much mercury as canned light tuna.
For people who are pregnant, may become pregnant, or are breastfeeding, FDA/EPA advice allows 2–3 servings per week from Best Choices. If albacore is chosen, the advice is one serving that week and no other fish.
What about adults outside those groups?
The pregnancy and child chart is designed for mercury-sensitive groups, not as a universal adult maximum. Still, the same principle is useful for everyone: vary seafood rather than using tuna as the only fish every day.
A can can provide a large amount of protein
Drained canned tuna commonly provides about 25–27 g protein per 100 g. A can with 3–4 oz drained tuna can therefore contribute roughly 22–30 g protein.
It is efficient protein, but rotating salmon, sardines, trout, shrimp, and other seafood changes omega-3, calcium, vitamin D, and mercury exposure.
Water-packed and oil-packed change calories
Water-packed tuna is very lean. Oil-packed tuna retains some oil even after draining, which raises fat and calories. That is not automatically unhealthy, but the two products are not calorie-equivalent.
Sodium varies by brand
Canned fish can also contribute substantial sodium. Low-sodium versions and label comparisons matter more when tuna is eaten often.
Frequency matters more than whether the tuna comes in a can
Canned tuna can be a convenient source of protein, but “healthy” depends partly on how often it appears and which tuna is in the can. FDA/EPA fish advice groups seafood according to mercury levels. Canned light tuna is generally placed in a lower-mercury category than albacore/white tuna, so someone eating tuna frequently should pay attention to the species or label wording rather than treating every can as equivalent.
For adults, variety is a useful strategy even when there is no special medical restriction. Rotating tuna with salmon, sardines, trout, shrimp and other seafood changes the mix of omega-3 fats, minerals and mercury exposure. It also reduces the tendency to turn one convenient product into the only fish in the diet. For children and for people who are pregnant or breastfeeding, the official serving-frequency advice is more specific and should guide choices.
The packing medium affects the meal too. Tuna in water usually adds fewer calories than tuna in oil, while oil-packed versions can be richer and more satisfying in salads or pasta. Sodium can range widely, so people who need to limit salt can compare regular, low-sodium and no-salt-added products. Draining the can changes some of these values, which is why the product label is more useful than a generic tuna number.
Finally, the rest of the dish matters. Tuna mixed with beans, vegetables and whole grains creates a very different meal from tuna combined mainly with mayonnaise and refined crackers. Canned tuna itself does not need to be avoided simply because it is canned; the sensible approach is to choose the type with the label in mind, vary seafood sources and keep total frequency consistent with current mercury guidance.
“Frequently” also depends on what else is eaten that week. Someone who has one tuna sandwich and otherwise chooses low-mercury fish is in a different situation from someone eating albacore tuna at lunch every day. The official fish advice is designed around repeated exposure over time, not a single meal. If tuna is a staple because it is affordable, rotating canned light tuna with salmon, sardines or other suitable canned fish can preserve convenience while broadening the nutrient profile. For people with kidney disease or another condition requiring sodium or protein limits, the issue may not be mercury alone, so product choice and portion size should follow their individualized plan.
The practical rule
Canned tuna can appear regularly, but make seafood varied. Canned light is the lower-mercury choice compared with albacore, while sodium and packing medium determine additional differences between cans.
