Potato vs Rice: Calories, Carbs, Fiber and Satiety

Potatoes and rice often fill the same space on a plate: they sit beside vegetables and a protein and provide much of the meal’s carbohydrate. That makes it tempting to reduce the comparison to one question—“which has fewer calories?”—but the answer depends a lot on how you measure and prepare them.

At the same cooked weight, potato provides fewer calories and carbs because it contains more water. That does not mean every potato serving is lower in calories than every rice serving, and it certainly does not stay true once the potato is fried.

White rice provides roughly 35–40 more calories and about 7 extra grams of carbohydrate per 100 grams cooked. Protein is nearly tied, while potato usually provides more fiber than white rice.

The reason is not that potato is inherently “low carb”

The main difference is water. A cooked potato holds a great deal of moisture in its tissue. Dry rice absorbs water during cooking too, but the finished grain remains more concentrated in starch by weight.

That means 100 grams of rice packs more energy into a smaller physical volume. It is a difference in density, not a verdict on which food is better.

A real serving changes the picture

A large 9-ounce potato provides roughly 230–245 calories. A 6-ounce serving of cooked white rice is around 220–230 calories. Even though potato looked clearly lower-calorie per 100 grams, those two realistic servings are almost tied in energy.

This matters because the table answers a concentration question: how much energy is in the same weight. It does not automatically tell you how much someone will put on the plate.

Visual volume differs too. A large potato can take up a substantial part of the plate and generally requires more chewing than a compact mound of rice. For some people that makes the meal feel larger, although fullness still depends heavily on protein, vegetables, sauces and the total portion.

Potatoes can be very filling when little fat is added

The combination of water, volume, starch and some fiber lets you serve a substantial portion at moderate energy density. In experimental satiety studies, boiled potatoes produced a particularly high satiety response.

Frying changes the equation. Water is lost and oil is absorbed, so French fries can exceed 300 calories per 100 grams—more than three times the energy density of boiled potato.

Toppings matter too. A plain baked potato with a modest amount of oil is not nutritionally equivalent to the same potato loaded with butter, cheese and creamy sauces. Rice changes in the same way when it is fried or cooked with generous amounts of oil.

Rice can be filling too when the meal is built around it

White rice is low in fiber, but it rarely has to stand alone. Beans, vegetables and a substantial protein source such as eggs, fish, meat or tofu raise the meal’s volume, fiber and protein considerably.

Brown rice also contains more fiber than white rice, so “potato versus rice” is not exactly the same comparison in every meal.

They also have different micronutrient strengths

Potatoes stand out for potassium and vitamin C. Rice contributes B vitamins and minerals; brown rice retains more magnesium and fiber, while enriched white rice may have selected nutrients added back after milling.

Cooking can shift those values. Boiling potatoes can move some potassium and vitamin C into the cooking water, while baking avoids that particular loss. For rice, the grain type, enrichment and cooking method all influence the final nutrient profile.

What to remember

Per 100 grams cooked, potato is less calorie- and carbohydrate-dense than white rice. But a larger potato serving can match the calories in a smaller rice serving. If the goal is satiety or managing meal energy, serving size and preparation matter just as much as choosing one or the other.
