Energy density vs. nutrient density

Energy density answers a mathematical question: how many calories are packed into each gram. Nutrient density asks how much useful nutrition a food provides relative to its energy, weight or serving. They are not opposite ends of one scale. Olive oil is highly energy-dense at about 8.8 calories per gram and still supplies vitamin E and unsaturated fat; strawberries are about 0.32 calories per gram and can also be nutrient-dense because of vitamin C and other compounds.

Dates vs. raisins: sugar, fiber and calories

Dates and raisins are both concentrated dried fruits. Per 100 g, Medjools have about 277 calories, 66–67 g of sugars and 6.7 g of fiber; raisins have roughly 299 calories, 59 g of sugars and 3.7 g of fiber. In a 30-g serving, that is about 83 calories and 20 g of sugars for dates versus 90 calories and 18 g for raisins. Dates provide more fiber; raisins are not automatically higher in sugar by weight.
