Eggs rarely beat chicken breast or tuna for protein per 100 g, but they have a different economic advantage: they come pre-portioned, cook in minutes, keep well under refrigeration, and combine protein with micronutrients at a price that is often moderate.
One large egg provides about 6–7 g protein and 70–80 calories. Two eggs supply roughly 12–14 g protein; three provide about 19 g. Reaching approximately 20 g protein with whole eggs therefore takes around three large eggs.
Price per dozen is less useful than price per protein serving
Egg prices vary by size, production method, store, and week. To compare eggs with another food, calculate what three eggs cost or, more precisely, the price of 20 g protein.
If a dozen costs $3.00, each egg is $0.25. Three eggs cost $0.75 and provide roughly 19 g protein. If the dozen costs $4.20, the same three eggs cost $1.05. The nutrition is nearly unchanged while the economics move substantially.
Egg size matters too. A dozen small eggs and a dozen large eggs do not contain exactly the same amount of total protein even at the same price. For a precise comparison, serving weight or the carton nutrition label is more useful than unit count alone.
Whole eggs contribute more than protein
The yolk contains most of the egg’s choline, vitamin B12, vitamin A, selenium, and fat. The white is mostly water and protein.
Replacing every whole egg with whites improves protein per calorie, but it is not a universal nutritional upgrade. A combination—two whole eggs plus extra whites, for example—can raise protein while keeping much of the yolk’s nutrient package.
Cost can shift here as well. Cartons of liquid whites may be convenient when you need many whites, but their price per gram of protein can be higher or lower than shell eggs depending on the store and brand.
Compared with legumes, eggs play a different role
Three large eggs provide about 19 g protein and essentially no fiber. A cup of cooked lentils provides roughly 18 g protein and 15.6 g fiber, plus substantially more carbohydrate and food volume.
That makes the phrase “affordable protein” more nuanced than it sounds. Eggs with whole-grain toast and vegetables serve a different meal function from a bowl of lentils.
They can also work together. Adding an egg to beans is not redundant: it increases protein and changes texture and flavor while the beans provide fiber that the egg lacks. Meal cost depends on the combination, not only the cheapest isolated protein.
Compared with chicken or tuna, eggs are less protein concentrated
Cooked chicken breast can provide about 31 g protein per 100 g, while whole egg is closer to 12–13 g. Drained water-packed tuna commonly exceeds 20 g protein per 100 g.
Getting 30 g protein from whole eggs would take roughly 4–5 large eggs, while about 3.5–4 ounces of chicken or tuna can approach that amount. For maximum protein concentration, other foods are more efficient.
Concentration is not the same as final cost, though. A more protein-dense food may cost more per pound, come in a package larger than you need, or create leftovers. A budget comparison needs price, portion, and waste as well as composition.
Where eggs gain ground: low waste and convenience
An egg can be used one at a time. There is no need to thaw a package or open a large container, so a household can cook exactly one, two, or three. That portion control can reduce food waste.
Eggs also fit inexpensive meals: vegetable omelets, eggs with beans, fried rice with leftover vegetables, or a hard-cooked egg added to a grain bowl. In those dishes, the egg completes the meal rather than having to provide every gram of protein.
Speed has practical value too. A food that can be cooked in a few minutes and combined with leftovers may prevent a more expensive convenience-food purchase when time is short.
Are eggs always the cheapest protein?
No. Dry beans and lentils often cost less per gram of protein; sale-priced chicken, milk, yogurt, peanut butter, or canned fish can also beat eggs depending on the store.
The strength of eggs is the package of reasonable cost, high-quality protein, micronutrients, storage life, and almost no advance preparation. In many kitchens, that combination matters more than winning by a few cents.
The best way to know is to redo the calculation with your actual prices. Three eggs, one cup of lentils, a tub of yogurt, or a can of fish can trade places in the budget without changing their basic nutritional roles.
