Stringy brown material, soft gelatinous clumps, sediment, and a smooth new pellicle can all occur during normal kombucha fermentation. Mold looks different: dry, fuzzy, raised patches on the surface, often white or colored, are a discard sign.
The liquid that collects on an unfed sourdough starter is often hooch, a mixture rich in water and fermentation alcohol. It usually means the culture has exhausted much of its available food. Regular feedings can revive it unless there is mold, pink or orange discoloration, or putrid spoilage.

Kimchi can bubble, hiss, or push liquid upward because its lactic acid bacteria continue fermenting sugars and produce carbon dioxide. Mild pressure and sour aroma can be normal, especially in young kimchi, but mold, putrid odor, or damaged packaging are different signals.
A raw mussel that is slightly gaping is not automatically dead. Live mussels can relax and open a little, but they should respond by closing when tapped or gently squeezed. A broken shell or a mussel that remains open is a reason to discard it.
Official food-safety guidance takes a conservative approach: cook mussels until the shells open and discard any that remain closed. A closed shell after cooking is not a laboratory proof of spoilage, but it is not worth forcing open and eating at home.
The dark line running along the back of a shrimp is the digestive tract, often called the vein even though it is not a blood vessel. It can contain food, sediment, or waste. Removing it is mainly a quality choice, particularly with large shrimp.
Transparent, glass-like crystals occasionally found in canned tuna can be struvite, a harmless mineral made of magnesium ammonium phosphate. It forms from natural constituents of seafood during commercial canning and is not the same as broken glass.
