Aluminum foil can tolerate normal air-fryer temperatures, but that does not mean it belongs in every model or every position. It can block circulation, move if left loose, or reach the heating element. Start with your appliance manual.
An air fryer is not a deep fryer and does not need a pool of oil in the pan. Many prefried frozen foods already contain enough fat. For fresh ingredients, a thin coating applied to the food can improve browning and texture.
White smoke from an air fryer commonly comes from liquid fat or old cooking residue reaching very hot surfaces. It should be corrected, but it does not automatically mean the appliance has failed. Black smoke, an electrical or melting-plastic smell, sparks, or flames call for shutting down and unplugging.
