Cooking spray contains fat and therefore energy. A zero-calorie line on the label usually reflects a very small declared serving and permitted rounding, not a physical absence of calories. The amount that matters is the amount you actually spray.
Both oils are rich in monounsaturated fat and work for cooking. Extra-virgin olive oil stands out for its research base and phenolic compounds, while refined avocado oil is milder in flavor and convenient for higher-heat applications.
Slightly dented or dry kernels usually mean sweet corn has lost moisture and peak freshness. If the cob still smells normal and has no slime, mold, wet decay, or fermented odor, it can be cooked, though it will be less juicy and tender.
Dry, fibrous flesh usually points to age, maturity, or moisture loss. If the squash remains firm and clean-smelling without mold or wet decay, it can still be cooked, though the texture may be disappointing.
Sprouted onions are generally safe if the bulb itself is sound. The green shoot is edible too, but sprouting uses the bulb’s stored water and sugars, so texture and flavor usually decline.
Wilted does not automatically mean spoiled. Limp but intact spinach can still be cooked if it has no slime, mold, wet decay, or off odor; slippery or mushy leaves belong in the trash.
For fluffy quinoa, water control matters more than stirring. Start around 1 part quinoa to 1.75–2 parts liquid, simmer until absorbed, then let it rest covered for 5–10 minutes before fluffing with a fork.
Rinsing quinoa under cold water helps remove surface saponins, natural compounds that can taste bitter or soapy. Many packaged quinoas are already washed or polished, but a quick rinse is still useful when the package does not say it is pre-rinsed.
A soapy or sharply bitter quinoa flavor usually comes from saponins left on the seed surface. Commercial processing removes most of them, but rinsing can help with residue. Burned quinoa or rancid stored grain can create different kinds of bitterness.
Cutting an onion ruptures cells that normally keep enzymes and sulfur-containing precursors separate. The reaction produces syn-propanethial-S-oxide, the onion’s lachrymatory factor, which reaches the eyes as vapor and stimulates sensory nerves, triggering tears.
Apple browning is an enzyme-and-oxygen reaction that starts when cutting breaks cells. Lemon juice or another acidic solution, tight wrapping, and refrigeration can slow it. A browned apple is not automatically unsafe, although normal food-safety and spoilage checks still apply.
Bananas freeze very well for smoothies and baking. Peel them first for easier use, freeze portions in a single layer if you want separate pieces, then transfer to an airtight freezer container. Thawed bananas become soft and watery but remain useful in cooked or blended recipes.
